Preview: Turkish title holders Galatasaray will hope the addition of several intriguing new faces will belatedly ignite their season, having made a shaky start initially. First up for the champions following the recent international break is a home meeting with Kasimpasa, who were soundly beaten home and away by Galatasaray in both league encounters last season.

Galatasaray Preview

Perhaps now, with the summer transfer window closed, the current domestic champions can focus more on the football side of things. The team should certainly be stronger on the back of several high-profile new arrivals, with none garnering as much fanfare than the addition of Radamel Falcao, but the current playing personnel clearly haven’t benefited from all the off-field distractions if early results are any sort of barometer.

I actually did the first game of theirs, which was away to Denizlispor, and I suspected it might not be straightforward. A 2-0 defeat in that fixture could have been very different, however, were it not for a missed penalty and a sending off for Galatasaray. Form has picked up since, although not by much, registering four points from games involving plenty of late drama with Konyaspor (1-1 at home) and Kayserispor (2-3).

Each of their games has featured at least one goal scored in the 90th minute or later (one scored by them but three by the opposition), meaning don’t rule out any late drama here. Meanwhile, we still await a first clean sheet of the season, which would enhance the prospect of further goals in this fixture – both league meetings last season produced 4-1 victories for Galatasaray.

No team in the top division of Turkish football produced better numbers at home than Fatih Terim’s team (W14 D4 L0, GF47 GA12), going the entire campaign unbeaten on their own patch. Getting all these new arrivals acclimatised will be key to maintaining such high standards this time around. One man who has hit the ground running, though, is Ryan Babel and he will be aiming to score for the third consecutive league game just four days after netting twice for the Netherlands whilst on international duty.

Kasimpasa Preview

The last thing a team which has failed to win any of its first three fixtures needs is a trip to the league champions, so you have to feel a little here for Kasimpasa who were soundly beaten (losing both by 4-1 scorelines) on both occasions they encountered Galatasaray last season. Perhaps they can seek inspiration from a 3-1 victory secured in Istanbul a couple of seasons ago, during the 2016/17 campaign.

Moving on to the current season and, although early days, it hasn’t been one to saviour. Three games in and they’re already occupying one of three relegation spots. Games with Trabzonspor (1-1 at home), Alanyaspor (Lost 4-1) and Ankaragucu (Lost 0-1) returned a solitary point, as a club which narrowly avoided the drop last time around, when finishing two places and as many points above the relegation zone, quickly settles into worryingly familiar surroundings.

A lack of goals has been a big issue in these early stages despite only firing the one blank so far. However, last season saw them defy their lowly position in the league table and outscore all but three sides in the whole of the division; 23 of their total of 53 goals were scored in away fixtures, which, at an average of 1.35 per away game, is respectable and could only be surpassed by four of their rivals.

Keeping goals out could be a bigger obstacle, however. Kasimpasa fell to more defeats than they could manage positive results when on their travels in 2018-19 (W4 D3 L10, GF23 GA35), with only one other team leaking goals at a worse rate in said fixtures.

Galatasaray V Kasimpasa Key Facts:

  • Galatasaray went unbeaten at home (W14 D4 L0) on their way to securing the 2018-19 Turkish Super Lig title.
  • Kasimpasa only managed the four away victories in 2018-19’s Turkish top-flight (W4 D3 L10).
  • Both league encounters last season produced the exact same outcome – 4-1 scorelines in favour of Galatasaray.

Betting Summary

The defending champions have not begun in a manner befitting of such, taking only four points out of a possible nine that went on offer. Galatasaray‘s only match at home produced a disappointing score draw with Alanyaspor (1-1) although they did at least ensure they went into the international break on a winning note when producing a dramatic 3-2 victory at Kayserispor. Unbeaten at home in the league last season.

Not many teams could boast of having scored more frequently in 2018-19’s Turkish Super Lig than Kasimpasa, but this was still a side which could consider themselves fortunate to stave off relegation. Therefore it comes as little surprise to see them down near the bottom of the standings following a draw and two defeats from their opening three fixtures.

Neither side has been successful in keeping a clean sheet so far. This has also been a fixture that seldom returns shut outs, with 15 of their 20 league meetings producing both teams to score. Galatasaray recruited heavily in the summer though, bolstering the midfield and forward department in particular. A home win with at least three match goals is instead the selection – a bet which landed nine times in Galatasaray’s home matches last season, and on both occasion that they played Kasimpasa.
