Preview: The bottom two teams in Group A meet in the hostile backdrop that is the Turk Telekom Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. The hosts, Galatasaray, were beaten 1-0 there on Matchday One by PSG, but that remains their only home defeat in all competitions this season (W2 D2 L1), while they should have been buoyed seeing the lengths to which Real Madrid have toiled in this competition so far.

Galatasaray Preview – Can Turkish champs build on weekend success?

Turkish champions Galatasaray, who have held that honour for the past two seasons, sit third in Group A following clashes with Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge. Just the one goal separated them with France’s finest, losing 1-0 at home to Les Parisiens, while a robust defensive display was enough for an equal share of the spoils in Belgium after a goalless draw with the latter. According to Expected Goals, though, both scorelines flattered them, conceding plenty of scoring chances.

The schedule doesn’t ease up anytime soon either, with successive home and away meetings versus the most successful club in the history of the competition up next. Just as well they picked up a timely win at the weekend then, recording a 3-2 scoreline over Sivasspor, at home, and thus ending a barren run of five matches without success (D4 L1). That they almost contrived to throw two separate two-goal leads away, conceding twice against an opponent down to ten men, will have concerned manager Fatih Terim.

Similar levels of complacency will almost certainly be punished in this game. Their cause will not be helped either by uncertainty surrounding the availability of several key individuals, as Christian Luyindama, Mario Lemina and Radamel Falcao are all doubts. The on-loan Florin Andone, who some will recognise from his less-than-successful spell at Brighton recently, could well spearhead the attack after starring in that aforementioned league win with a brace of goals.

Real Madrid Preview – Los Blancos to secure first group stage victory?

It has become common knowledge that no team are more decorated in Europe than Real Madrid, whose recent spell of dominance between 2015 and 2018 extended their haul of titles to an unrivalled 13. However, their crown would be surrendered with a whimper last season. This season, meanwhile, has been even more damning after losing convincingly in Paris to PSG before scraping a fortuitous draw at home with Club Brugge.

Losing away to a talented PSG side was one thing but to only muster a draw at home to Club Brugge was less forgivable. The performance in particular was galling, deservedly falling two goals behind before producing a commendable, if expected, fightback to claw a point from a contest they could quite easily have lost. That is now five goals conceded in only two matches, and what is more alarming is that the sum could have been larger.

The league campaign has been running a lot more smoothly, or at least that was the case up until recently. Saturday’s surprising loss at Real Mallorca, losing 1-0, marked the first occasion Los Blancos had suffered defeat in La Liga action this season – though it was the third instance in their previous four away matches in all competitions that the Madrid attack had failed to register a goal. To compound matters, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric are among a selection of players considered doubtful.

Galatasaray V Real Madrid Key Facts:

  • Galatasaray have only been beaten once at home all season (W2 D2 L1), but that did come in this group against PSG (0-1).
  • Real Madrid lost for the first time in the league on Saturday, losing 1-0 away to Real Mallorca, and are still to record a win in this group (D1 L1).
  • Of the six previous Champions League meetings between the two, Real Madrid have won four times (W4 L2), including a 6-1 hammering dished out on their last visit to Turkey back in 2013.

Betting Summary

Galatasaray have enjoyed a decent start to the campaign, losing only one of eight domestic matches – which was on the opening weekend of the season – whilst competing relatively well in this competition to limit PSG and Club Brugge to one goal between them. Securing a first win for six matches on Friday will have been very timely as well.

Real Madrid were hopeless at PSG and then abject at home to Club Brugge, shipping a combined five goals when it could have conceivably been more. Furthermore, their previously smooth league campaign hit a roadblock on Saturday, losing for the first time in Real Mallorca to make it one win in their last five competitive away fixtures (W1 D2 L2) – failing to even score on three occasions.

The Istanbul factor should not be underestimated. Particularly when factoring in Real Madrid’s away woes of late, winning one of their previous five such matches and failing to even score on three of those occasions. Galatasaray have only given up the one goal thus far, at home to a PSG side that thumped Los Blancos 3-0 on Matchday One. So the hosts could very well hold their own here, and possibly then some.
