Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has really come from nowhere to line herself up as a dark horse in the quarter finals of the Australian Open 2020.

However, she will be an underdog for this fixture against Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard, who has Grand Slam-winning experience, is gathering some pretty hot momentum in Melbourne.

Muguruza peaking at the right time for a title challenge

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, a former world number one in the game, is coming on strong at the Australian Open 2020. Muguruza won the 2016 French Open title and then added Wimbledon 2017 to it. She has only made it to the semi final of one Slam since then however.

But now this is a golden chance to reach the final four for what would be the first time ever at Melbourne Park. The Spaniard dropped sets in her first two matches of this tournament, but then she kicked into high gear.

She was up against fifth seed Elina Sviotlina in the third round and Muguruza smashed her opponent 6-1 6-2. That was a stunning result. Then it was another top-ten seed that she knocked out in the fourth round, getting the better of Kiki Bertens in straight sets as well.

Our betting prediction:
Muguruza 2-1
3/1

There have been five previous meetings between the two players, one of them ending in a walkover after Muruguza retired in the second set of a 2018 Stuttgart meeting. Each of the other four completed fixtures between the duo have been won by the Spaniard.

So the head to head form is there for Muguruza. The most recent meeting happened in Birmingham 2018 with Muruguza taking an easy win, dropping just the three games on her way to a straight-sets victory.

Russian can make Muguruza work

So with Muruguza coming into such hot form and blistering her way past her last two opponents, why lean towards a 3-set fixture in the quarter finals? It is because of what Pavlyuchenkova has come up with so far. She is a well-seasoned player, seeded 30th at the Australian Open 2020.

She got through her first two matches without dropping a set and then that lined up her against second seed Karolina Pliskova in the third round. The Russian had been heavy underdog for that match up. But in an incredibly tight and tense game, it was the Russian who came through. She did it in straight sets as well, winning both on a tie break. So that saw her hold her nerve tremendously well.

There was more of that to come as well as she faced 17th seed, Angelique Kerber, in the fourth round. Pavlyuchenkova had dropped the opening set on a tie break and it looked for all the world that that was the point at which her resistance was going to be broken.

It wasn’t. She scrapped back to take the second on a tie-breaker, before going up another gear to power her way through to a 6-2 win in the deciding set. This is her third appearance in the quarter finals of the Australian Open in the last four years. She’s never been beyond this stage of any Slam in her career.
