Last season’s champions Genk are struggling to make it into the Championship round this time around and will be hoping they can upset this year’s champions-elect Club Brugge at home on Sunday.

Genk Preview – Can Genk give their European hopes a boost by getting the better of leaders?

Having won the title so impressively last season, this campaign been much more of a struggle for Genk. The current champions come into this game in seventh spot and a massive 23 points behind their weekend opponents who sit top of the table. It’s a massive comedown from their success 12 months ago and they have a battle on their hands to get into the Championship group which would allow them to challenge for European football next season.
Last weekend’s win over Kortrijk away from home was Genk’s first win in three league games and a much-needed on as well having taken just a point from two games against teams above them in the table.

There’s no dressing up how big a disappointment this season has been for Genk and the games are fast running out for them to finish the regular season in the top six. With three games left, including this one, Genk know a win tomorrow would see them move back into the Championship Group but that will be a big ask against a team as impressive as Club Brugge have been.
Their recent home form doesn’t inspire huge amounts of confidence, either, with only three wins in their last seven league matches at home.

Club Brugge Preview – Will Club Brugge continue their relentless charge to the title at home of current champions?

It’s been a fantastic response from Club Brugge who were champions of Belgium back in 2018 only to finish second last season to a deserving Genk team. There’s been no feeling sorry for themselves, however. Instead, they’ve come back even stronger this time and despite being before the split they are looking very good to finish the season as champions.

The way in which the top division works in Belgium is the league splits in two and the teams in the top half play off for the title and European place. The significant factor is each team’s points total is halved. For Brugge that would mean, as things stand, their current nine point lead would become 5 points. So there is work to be done.

It’s been a relentless charge to the top of the table for Brugge who have lost only once all season. That defeat came away to Royal Antwerp and it’s a sign of how consistent they have been. There was a rare loss in midweek and a comprehensive won at that as they exited Europe 6-1 on aggregate to Manchester United.

There should be no real concern as to what the response will be from this group of players who have been so impressive throughout the campaign.

Genk vs Club Brugge Betting Advice

There is obviously a huge gulf in points between these teams but Genk did hold Club Brugge to a 1-1 draw when they faced them earlier this season. That should give the home side the belief they can compete and get a result tomorrow. However, their current situation means they really need to go for all three points with only two games left after this.

Key Facts – Genk vs Club Brugge Betting Tip

  • It’s just three home wins in seven league matches for Genk coming into this match
  • Brugge have lost only one league game this season, a 2-1 defeat at Antwerp in November
  • This sides drew 1-1 in Brugge earlier this season which will give the home team confidence

It’s a clash between the champions and league leaders and will have an impact on both team’s aspirations. It would have been a sobering defeat in the Europa League for they have dropped a few points on their travels of late. Their record here is also not the best which means a point would probably not be the worst result.

The visitors have drawn their last three away games in the league and I’m backing them to make it four in a row.
