Sunday’s early afternoon kickoff between Genoa and Atalanta looks set to be a really entertaining clash between two teams who have combined for 10 goals in their first two league games of the season.

Genoa Preview – Can Genoa continue strong start to the season and remain unbeaten?

Aurelio Andreazzoli took over as Genoa boss in the summer and will be happy with how things have gone in the very early stages of the season. Four points from two games is good by anybody’s standard but particularly for a club who were so close to falling into Serie B at the end of the last campaign. Genoa survived courtesy of a better head to head over Empoli, finishing level on points. That was a sign of how fine the margins were and somewhat ironically Andreazzoli arrived from Emploi in the weeks after that final weekend. He will be hoping his new team’s start will help alleviate any further relegation battles this time around but there is a long way to go.

Genoa will take great confidence not only from the points they have on the board but also because of who they have played. The opening weekend of the season seen them travel to the capital to take on Roma. Few would have given them a chance but they came back from a goal down on three occasions to earn a point. Fiorentina at home was another big test but one they handled brilliantly to win 2-1. The big games keep on coming for Genoa but they seem to be relishing them and are also scoring plenty of goals.

Atalanta Preview – Will Atalanta go into first ever Champions League game on Wednesday on the back of a win?

This will be a historic week for Atalanta as they build up to their first game in the group stages of the Champions League. A terrific campaign last season saw them qualify automatically and they will now face games against Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City. It’s a group they will feel they can qualify from but it’s also set to be six really big occasions. Before that, their focus is on domestic matters and attempting to secure points off the international break. Their two two games so far have shown little has changed from the previous seasons, still being the entertainers of Italian football.

Two games in and Atalanta have scored five and conceded five. A 3-2 win away to SPAL on the opening day was earned after going two goals behind. We seen it so often last season where this team are able to win points from losing positions. It was something of a reverse last time out, however. Having taken a 2-1 lead early in the first half, Atalanta lost 3-2 at home to Torino. It’s difficult to be overly critical of their approach to the game as it was so successful last season. Gian Piero Gasperini will be aware that is team cannot continue to concede two and three goals each game, though.

Key-Facts – Genoa v Atalanta

  • It’s been a really good start to the season for Genoa who have four points from their first two games under new coach Aurelio Andreazzoli
  • Atalanta face Dinamo Zagreb in their first ever group stage game in the Champion League on Wednesday but will be looking for all three points in this one, first
  • Both these teams have scored five goals in their first two games of the 19/20 Serie A season

Genoa v Atalanta Betting Advice

If the first couple of games of the season are anything to go by then this should be a treat. There have been nine goals scored in Genoa’s first two matches and one more in their opponents. Looking through the past meetings and the trend for goals is also strong. The last seven games have all had at least three goals with a total of 25 goals shared between the two sides. In that time Atalanta have had the upper hand winning six of those seven matches.

The main selection in this game is an obvious one – over 2.5 goals. The two teams have started in blistering form on the scoring front and the historical trends are positive. For greater value, some may also be tempted by an away win and both teams to score. It would have been a winner in four of the last seven meetings.
