Two teams bang out of form meet on Saturday in Serie A as Genoa look to climb out the relegation with a result that could see their opponents Milan take their place.

Genoa Preview – Can Genoa get their second win of the season and pile more pressure on big-spending Milan?

Genoa survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season but it looks like it could be another campaign where they struggle. Six games into this season and Genoa are third bottom with five points. Their only victory so far was a 2-1 win against Fiorentina – their first home game of the season. Looking back and seeing how the Florence team have improved it was a very valuable win. The issue has been failing to follow up on that, however, losing three of their next four matches with their only other point coming at home to Bologna in their most recent home game. Last weekend’s 4-0 defeat away to Lazio was a humbling experience and one that they will have to respond to otherwise they will remain in the bottom three during the international break.

That heavy defeat last weekend means only Sampdoria – their big rivals – have conceded more goals than Genoa. That is going to be the area of their play where they need to improve if they are to climb the table. Going forward they have shown they are capable but have drawn a blank in their last two games. Christian Kouame is the club’s top scorer so far with three goals in six. The young Ivorian is going to be an important player if Genoa are to get a result on Saturday.

Milan Preview – Will Milan put their troubles behind them and go into the international break on the back of an all too rare victory?

A new manager and big investment in the summer meant there was a lot of expectation surrounding Milan this season. Marco Giampaolo was the choice to steer the club back into the Champions League having done well at previous club Sampdoria. Half a dozen games into his maiden season at the San Siro and there is already talk that he could be one game away from losing his job. That’s how unforgiving managing at the top clubs in Italian football can be and Giampaolo is finding out the hard way.

Losing on the opening day away to Udinese was hardly the ideal start but Milan did at least bounce back with two wins, as unconvincing as they were. It’s since losing in the derby to rivals Inter where the pressure has really cranked up. An away defeat to Torino followed before a humbling 3-1 loss at home to Fiorentina last time out means that they are just a point above Saturday’s opponents. If Milan do suffer a fourth successive loss then it would unfortunately be no surprise to see the current coaching looking for a new job. The fact it’s against a former local rival just adds extra meaning for the former Sampdoria boss.

Key-Facts – Genoa v Milan

  • Genoa have managed only one win this season and have lost three of their last four games
  • A big season was expected for Milan following the changes in the summer but it’s been a struggle and they are on a three game losing run
  • This has been a kind fixture for Milan in recent times, winning four of the last five meetings

Genoa v Milan Betting Advice

There’s not many games that Milan would be looking forward to at the moment but Genoa may just make that list. It’s an opponent they have done well against in recent season, winning four of the last five meetings including both games last season. There will not have been many times that there has only been one point between the two clubs in the table which is an indication of how much the visitors are struggling in the early stages of the season.

The interesting thing here will be how Milan line up. Giampaolo has been resistant to play a lot of his summer signings but his need is now urgent. Genoa are one of the few teams worse off than their opponents and it could be that there is a reprieve for Milan. It may not be pretty but they can just about edge their way to all three points.
