Genoa Preview – Will this be the game where Sheva gets his first victory in charge of Genoa?

One league win all season means only one thing for Genoa and that’s a position in the bottom three. They sit in 19th place with only Salernitana beneath them, and currently two points adrift of safety. It was no surprise to see the club look to make a change in the dugout but the appointment of Andriy Shevchenko did raise a few eyebrows. The former Ukrainian international boss has been in charge for four games, managing to pick up just a point following a goalless draw away to Udinese.

Shevchenko has not been helped with the fact they have played Roma, AC Milan and Juventus in the other three matches and will be looking to the next couple of matches against teams closer to them in the table and get some points and goals on the board. Genoa are yet to score a goal under their new head coach.

Before the managerial change Genoa’s only win was a 3-2 win away to Cagliari meaning they have yet to win a home game in the league this season. The last time they done so was in April when defeating Spezia. Their run since has seen them lose six and draw three.

Unsurprisingly considering their position in the table Genoa have the second worst home attack in the league scoring only seven in as many games. The last time they scored a home goal was in the middle of October.

Sampdoria Preview – Can Samp begin to improve their poor away form?

The departure of Claudio Ranieri in the summer did come with a risk for Sampdoria in that they could see themselves be worse of this season than last. The team finished ninth in the previous campaign but are now in 15th place and only five points outside the relegation places. New boss Roberto D’Aversa will feel he has the players to turn it around but knows a loss in the derby could be fatal.

Samp come into this game having lost their last two and five of their last seven in Serie A. It’s only three wins in the last 12 games so there is bound to be mounting pressure on the former Parma coach.

In their last five away games in the league they have lost four and conceded three goals in each of them. And the highest placed team they have faced in that run is currently sixth which indicates where their struggles lie.

Only Spezia and Salernitana have conceded more goals so far and whilst D’Aversa is known for his expansive style of play he will also be aware that whilst down at the bottom of the table they may have to be more pragmatic.

Genoa vs Sampdoria Betting Advice

It is one of the oldest rivalries in Italian football and loses nothing in passion despite the clubs’ more modest positions in terms of standing compared to the bigger names and derby matches. Genoa will be hoping the old adage that form goes out the window in these matches is an accurate one considering their troubles. Whilst the visitors are looking for improvement on their travels.

It’s now 10 years since Genoa won a home game against Sampdoria. They are, however, unbeaten in the last four meetings including winning two of them (both on the road). Before that Sampdoria had won five out of seven.

Key Facts – Genoa vs Sampdoria Betting Tip

  • Genoa are still looking for their first win (and goal) since Shevcehnko took over last month
  • Sampdoria have conceded 12 goals in their last five away games
  • You have to go all the way back to 2011 for the last time Genoa won a home derby

It is impossible to have faith in either of these teams considering their respective form (in Sampdoria, away from home). I expect Genoa to try and keep things tight knowing they lack goals and with Sampdoria leaking plenty of late they may well err on the side of caution as well. Under 2.5 goals has been a winner of eight of the last 10 games between the two and that is the best bet here.
