In another mouth-watering clash in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016 finals, two teams that are past masters of grinding out wins in major tournaments clash in Bordeaux when Germany meet Italy for the right for a semi-final place.
Germany came through the group stages unscathed as they beat Ukraine 2-0, drew 0-0 with second placed Poland and beat Northern Ireland 1-0 as they topped Group C by virtue of scoring one more goal than the Poles.
The German defence has been rock solid so far in this tournament and have yet to concede a goal so far, but they’ll face much stiffer competition this evening against Italy who overcame Spain in the round of 16.
Onto Italy then, and they have also been impressive in these Euro 2016 finals as they won Group E, finishing ahead of second placed Belgium thanks to conceding fewer goals (1), and they carried this solid form into the last 16 when they beat favourites Spain 2-0.
Italy also possess a solid defence as they’ve conceded just 1 goal throughout this tournament to date, and they have answered their critics so far who perhaps had written them off when comparing them to other super-powers Germany and Spain.
But with Pelle up front, and hard-working midfielders such as De Rossi and Giaccherini, the Italians are in with a shout of causing another upset on Saturday evening.
However, that said, I do fancy Germany to emerge from this battle as they possess a superior bench and as this game could well go into extra-time, this could be the difference.
