Germany Prediction – Can Germany take over at the top?
This may come as a surprise to many people but neither of the heavyweights of Europe, Germany or the Netherlands currently sit top of Group C – instead that honour goes to Northern Ireland as they sit top with 12 points.
Germany are a close second though and are just 3 points adrift of the Irish with a game in hand, which happens to be Friday night’s clash with 3rd placed Netherlands in Berlin in what promises to be a cracker if recent previous encounters between these two sides are anything to go by.
The hosts have the incentive of knowing that a win tonight would see them go top on goal difference and replace Northern Ireland as the leaders of Group C, and having won all 3 of their group matches so far, the hosts look in good shape.
Wins against Netherlands (3-2 away), Belarus (2-0 away) and an 8-0 annihilation of Estonia at home have seen Germany sweep all opponents aside to date, but the Netherlands have proven to be a tough adversary in recent encounters, with 5 of the last 6 meetings producing over 2.5 goals as both teams have given no quarter.
Netherlands Prediction – Can Netherlands stay in the hunt?
The Netherlands sit in 3rd place in Group C but the visitors find themselves some way off the pace as they trail group leaders, Northern Ireland, by a significant 9-point margin and Friday night’s hosts, Germany, by a 6-point margin, so if Netherlands are to stay in touch with the top two nations, they must get a result here.
The visitors have played just 2 matches of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign though, which have resulted in a resounding 4-0 home win over Belarus, but defeat at home to Germany followed in a 3-2 loss in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Since these two opening group matches, Netherlands recorded a 3-1 win over England in extra-time before losing 1-0 to Portugal in the inaugural final of the UEFA Nations League, so they’ll bring fresh confidence into these upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The Dutch will have to be prepared to go toe-to-toe with the Germans in Berlin, which is something they’ve had to do in their previous visit which ended in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw back in November of last year.
