Both Germany and Hungary know a win would guarantee their passage to the next stage and the two will be confident after positive results in their last matches.

Germany Preview – Will Germany follow up their impressive win over current champions to make it to the last-16?

There’s not been the usual expectation or swagger about this German team ahead of Euro 2020 and that seemed top be well placed after their opening game against France where despite enjoying the majority of possession were unable to must any real threat. It meant they were up against it facing a Portugal team on three points already in what has been tagged the group of death. As should be no surprise, Germany responded in a resounding manner – winning 4-2.

It is the performance of the tournament so far and will have made others sit up and take notice that despite little fanfare around the squad, this is still a group with plenty of talent and big-match experience.

Our betting prediction
Draw HT/Germany FT
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Monday 21 June)
Germany must now complete the job and ensure they get a win over Hungary which will ensure they fill one of the top two places in the section, allowing them to take their chance in the knockout phase. If they were to put on another strong showing then most will be wanting to avoid them.
Joachim Low knows that every next game of this competition could be his last as head coach of Germany putting an end to 15 years in the job. He’s made it to a final and two semi-finals in his three attempts at the European Championships so will feel he has unfinished business before leaving.

Hungary Preview – Can Hungary pull off a massive shock and make it to the knockout phase for a second straight finals?

The way in which Hungary lost their opening game of this tournament could easily have impacted their motivation and enthusiasm for their next two games but we should know by now that this is a nation – particularly under the charge of Marco Rossi – that defies the odds and enjoys proving people wrong. Hungary were excellent for long periods against the current champions but lost 3-0 with all the goals coming in the final 10 minutes.

They didn’t let that get them down and were even better against the World Champions on Saturday, eventually sharing the points in a 1-1 draw.

It leaves Hungary needing to win this game and that would guarantee a second consecutive qualification for the knockout phase of the Euros. They actually qualified top of their section in 2016 and whilst they are unlikely to do that again, this would outdo that achievement such is the task that awaits them in Munich on Wednesday.

The loss to Portugal is Hungary’s only defeat in their last 13 games so this is a team used to getting results and they will feel they can be competitive in this one as well.

Germany vs Hungary Betting Advice

These two nations will forever be tied for meeting in what is one of the best finals in World Cup history. Germany were victorious 3-2 back in 1954 and that remains the last time the two clashed at a major finals. There may not be as much significance on this contest but it remains crucial for both and they do need to win to guarantee their progression to the last-16.

Key Facts – Germany vs Hungary Betting Tip

  • Germany bounced back from defeat to France by thrashing Portugal last time out
  • Hungary need to win if they are to match their 2016 run to the knockout phase
  • The last time these two met in a major tournament was in the 1954 final with Germany running out 3-2 winners

Unsurprisingly, particularly after Saturday’s win, Germany are big favourites to get the three points. Hungary will look to frustrate their opponents though and with their first two games in the competition being draws at half-time I’m banking on that being the result after 45 minutes once again.
