Well, there was very interesting stuff last week in the Premier League darts. Michael van Gerwen lost for the second time in three matches as he was soundly beaten by Michael Smith. So he will be looking for redemption. Standing in his way is Gerwyn Price who got close to toppling the Dutchman in the UK Open on the weekend.

Michael van Gerwen has the wobbles
Defeats against Nathan Aspinall and Micahel Smith in the last three rounds of Premier League action has rocked Michael van Gerwen. There doesn’t, of course, look any danger to him not finishing in the top four and probably going on to defend the title again.
But is having sterner tests along the way in this campaign. Michael van Gewren, despite the two losses, holds a three-dart average of over 100 in the league currently. That’s better than what everyone else has managed. He’s still going to step up and fire off those scores.
MVG met Gerwyn Price on the weekend in the final of the UK Open and he toughed out an 11-9 win on the night after coming under pressure. That will have been a massive relief for him with the patchy form he has produced late, such as his first-round exit at the Masters.
There is every reason still to back him. He is the best in the business. The one thing that has just been missing from his league campaign is checkout accuracy. It hasn’t quite been there as he is only average 96 across his five matches.
Price with a point to prove
Gerwyn Price was pretty scrappy in the final of the UK Open over the weekend against Van Gerwen. Interestingly the two players have traded wins in the last five meetings, Van Gerwen edging that sequence 3-2. But there is a bigger picture.
Those two wins are the only two that Price has taken over Michael van Gewren in his career. Price trails the head to head W2 D1 L20. But he will take confidence from those being recent victories at least, as they have both happened since November last year.

Price suffered his first loss in this season’s Premier League last week. He went down heavily against Glen Durrant, leaving him on a W1 D3 L1 record for the season. So it’s not as if he has been carrying a big, sharp winning touch.
He has the lowest tally of 140+ scores of all players in this season’s league, by a considerable margin as well. Can the Welshman capitalise on the recent dip in results that Van Gerwen has had and secure his first Premier LEaguewin against the Dutchman?
