Getafe Preview – Defence key to winning riposte?

Top four aspirations were dealt a blow on Friday as Getafe (5th – W13 D7 L8), playing their first league encounter since March, were undone in Granada despite taking an early lead through midfielder David Timor. The loss was nothing less than they deserved, though, ultimately succumbing to a strong second half performance from the hosts who fought back to secure a 2-1 scoreline along with maximum points.

Defeat hardly represents a disaster for coach Jose Bordalas, whose side remain firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish that would see them spend next season competing in the Champions League. However, for that to transpire, there clearly has to be a dramatic improvement. Getafe have now won one of the last five in La Liga (W1 D1 L3), scoring only three times after creating a measly 0.74 in xG versus Granada.

Should a win be forthcoming on Tuesday at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, where their record throughout 2019/20 has remained solid at W7 D4 L3, it would seem a clean sheet is likely to follow suit. Getafe’s last nine league victories were all achieved without conceding. Meanwhile, only two of the previous eight visiting sides (W5 D1 L2) were successful in breaching the Getafe rearguard.

Espanyol Preview – Hope springs eternal after weekend triumph?

In desperate trouble when the Coronavirus forced La Liga into a three month hiatus back in March, Espanyol (20th – W5 D8 L15) would at least make a winning return as they put in one of their standout displays of the season so far to comprehensively beat Alaves on Saturday. On top from beginning to end, the Barcelona-based outfit were good value for the 2-0 win, finishing the contest at RCDE Stadium with an impressive 2.57 xG.

Playing against ten men for a large chunk of the match a few days ago did probably flatter their performance. Nevertheless, it was the sort of display which should instil confidence into the collective. More important of all, the gap on safety has already had a sizeable chunk taken out of it, now only three points from climbing clear of the relegation zone and salvaging an otherwise dreadful campaign.

The aim now will be winning successive league games, something they have failed to managed all season long. Away wins are also a rarity, managing only three of those so far and just one since the start of November (W1 D1 L7) after losing seven of the last nine. Four were without finding the net meanwhile, as Espanyol’s uninspiring attacking numbers – notching 11 times in 14 outings – ranks among the worst in La Liga.

Getafe Vs Espanyol Betting Advice

Only the very best in Spain have won at Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez in 2019/20, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla the only side to have beaten Jose Bordalas’ men on their own patch. That is an alarming statistic for Espanyol, who could do with adding to their win last time out but will be hard pressed to do so having lost seven of their previous nine away matches in La Liga.

Getafe Vs Espanyol – Key Facts

  • One win in five now for Getafe, after losing 2-1 in Granada on Friday. Meanwhile, Espanyol broke a four-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over Alaves at home on Saturday.
  • Getafe have denied seven visiting sides from scoring this season, whereas Espanyol would fail to score themselves on six occasions on their travels.
  • Four of the last six La Liga meetings featured less than three match goals, with this season’s clash at Espanyol finishing obliging as it ended 1-1.

Even though Espanyol arrive on a high, seeing past a home win isn’t exactly straightforward. Getafe haven’t dropped a point as the home side in this fixture for four successive seasons, doing so without conceding – which has been their speciality this season – in the last two campaigns. Adding the clean sheet to a home win is therefore one way of potentially extracting extra value on the hosts.
