Greenock Morton Preview – Will Morton’s resurgence continue as they bid to move further clear of the?

Dougie Imrie was not an overwhelmingly popular appointment to take over at Morton in December following his playing spell at rivals St Mirren, albeit he also played at Cappielow for a season, too. However, fast forward a couple of months and the club’s supporters will be delighted with how things are going. Imrie arrived when Morton were bottom of the table and really struggling to find anything close to the form which would see them survive in Scotland’s second tier.

Now they are eighth and could move eight points clear of their opponents if they can get a win on Saturday. Morton come into this game as the form team in the Championship and Imrie fresh off celebrating the manager of the month award for January.

Last weekend’s win away to Inverness means they are now unbeaten in five league games, taking 11 points in that time. Imrie is still yet to taste defeat in the Championship and has surpassed the number of wins the club were able to accumulate in the first 18 games of the season. Morton were also unlucky not to knockout Premiership club Motherwell in the Scottish Cup, taking them all the way to extra time.

The most impressive aspect of the turnaround is that Imrie is still relying on the players who were at the club which is encouraging for the games ahead.

Queen of the South Preview – Can Queens give their survival hopes a boost with a first one of the year?

A consequence of the team who were bottom of the table improving is that it means another has to replace them. And that is the case for Queen of the South who now find themselves struggling to stay in the division. It isn’t a totally unfamiliar position as they finished ninth in consecutive seasons in 2019 and 2020 but things looked to be improving having been sixth last season.

Manager Alan Johnston will be fearing the worst considering their recent form but knows how quickly things can turnaround if they are able to get a positive result against one of their rivals.

Queens have yet to win a game in 2022. They have taken only two points from a possible 15 and have conceded 12 goals in that run of five matches. The bottom club also have the worst defensive away record in the Championship, conceding 23 goals in 11 games. Their last clean sheet on the road was in September.

Despite their defensive fails on the road they do know how to score goals with only Partick Thistle and leaders Arbroath scoring more away goals. They’ve failed to score in only two of their 11 on their travels in the league.

Greenock vs Queen of the South Betting Advice

Morton’s recent improvement has really put the pressure on Queen of the South who could be eight points behind them at the end of this one and are also four points behind Dunfermilne, but they do have a game in hand over that rival.

Queens will also take some encouragement from the fact they have taken four points from the two meetings against Morton this season, although that was a much different team to the one they will face tomorrow.

Key Facts –  Greenock Morton vs Queen of the South Betting Tip

  • Morton are yet to lose a league game since Dougie Imrie took over in December
  • Queen of the South have conceded more away goals than any other team in the Championship
  • Seven of the last nine meetings between the teams have had three or more goals scored

The visitors have drawn their last four away games in the league, including a share of the points against three of the top five, so they are capable. But Morton are in excellent form at the moment and the incentive to go so far clear of bottom place can see them take three points here.
