National League outfit Grimsby Town entertain League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town at Blundell Park tonight for the right to progress into the possibly lucrative third round of the FA Cup, where a Premier League club may beckon.
This competition still remains vitally important to the lower league clubs as they look to cash in on a good cup run and none mores than Grimsby Town who have found it difficult to escape out of the non-league top flight since their relegation from League Two. However, The Mariners have enjoyed a more successful campaign so far this term as they currently sit in fourth place having won 7 of their 12 home matches to date.
In addition, only Wrexham with 30 goals have scored more on home turf than Grimsby Town who possess the likes of Amond (14 goals), Bogle (10 goals) and Pittman (3 goals) in their attacking personnel.
Visitors Shrewsbury Town have been handed the unenviable task of trying to get a result away from home up in a cold Cleethorpes on Monday night where a potential banana-skin awaits them and the prospect of crashing out of this year’s FA Cup.
The Shrews have struggled to find any kind of form in League One this season as they currently occupy a lowly 19th place in the English third tier, although they’ve managed to score and concede goals on a regular basis on their travels which is good for my pick tonight.
In addition, they’ve already chalked up a first round win away at Gainsborough Trinity so they’ll fancy their chances in Grimsby tonight too. Shrewsbury also possess some useful attacking talent in the shape of Collins, Kaikai and Barnett and they too could cause a few problems for the home defence.
All in all, this looks a difficult one to call but I’m confident that both teams can score here.
