Guangzhou Evergrande Preview – Cruising into the latter stages?

Last time out, a calamitous conclusion to the Canton derby saw former Barcelona midfielder Paulinho capitalise on a goalkeeping blunder, deep into second-half stoppage time, to seal a 2-1 victory for Guangzhou Evergrande over local rivals Guangzhou R&F. A result which consolidated their strong season thus far – they’ve won seven of nine Super League games – as well as their position atop Group A.

Fabio Cannavaro knows his team, which are five points clear of second-place Jiangsu Suning and eleven better off than upcoming opponents Shenzhen in fifth, are firmly on course for a top-four finish that would see them progress on to the Championship Stage. Meanwhile, no team in either group has registered more wins (7), points (22 from 27) or goals scored (23 in nine games) than the 2019 Super League winners.

The aforementioned Paulinho has been influential once again this season, and has now netted in four of his previous five league appearances – failing only in his team’s comfortable 4-1 win away to Shanghai Shenhua. If he doesn’t find the target, a team-mate invariably will, with Guangzhou Evergrande scoring on at least two occasions in all but one of their nine league matches so far.

Shenzhen Preview – Nightmare fixture awaits top-four hopefuls?

With the battle to finish inside the top-four looking like it will go right down to the wire, no fixture can be viewed as a lost cause from the perspective of Shenzhen, not even when it involves a trip to the runaway leaders in the group who also happen to be last season’s overall champions. A fixture which, over the years, has brought them nothing but grief.

On the nine previous occasions Shenzhen have encountered Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League, they’ve avoided defeat only once, in their very first duel all the way back in 2008. As ominous as that dismal record is, the ‘Youth Army’ can be encouraged by what this team has achieved more recently. Last Friday’s draw, for example, stretched their current unbeaten league run to four matches (W2 D2).

The recent turnaround is even more impressive when considering how it proceeded four successive defeats, at which point a top-four finish seemed beyond them. That is no longer the case, trailing fourth-placed Shanghai Shenhua by only one point. Moreover, their sole away triumph this season (W1 D1 L2) would come in Guangzhou, albeit over a vastly inferior Guangzhou R&F outfit currently second-bottom.

Guangzhou Evergrande Vs Shenzhen Betting Advice

Top meets fifth, so it’s no surprise we have a clear favourite. Guangzhou Evergrande lead the way in Group A, amassing five points more than anyone else after notching seven wins through their first nine matches (W7 D1 L1). That is four more than opponents Shenzhen (W3 D2 L4) have so far managed, having taken four points from twelve across their four away fixtures to date.

Guangzhou Evergrande Vs Shenzhen– Key Facts

  • Across four home Super League games this season, Guangzhou Evergrande would net exactly two goals on three occasions – including each of the last two in 2-1 wins over Jiangsu Suning and Guangzhou R&F.
  • Four games without losing for Shenzhen (W2 D2), who have scored at least once in three of their four away outings so far.
  • On the nine previous occasions these clubs have met in the China Super League, only once – their maiden meeting in 2008 – have Shenzhen avoided defeat (D1 L8).

Guangzhou Evergrande’s last five Super League games have seen goals at both ends, winning the last two 2-1 (9/1 BetVictor). Meanwhile Shenzhen – who always carry a significant scoring threat through John Mary, with the Cameroon striker boasting six goals for the season – have netted five times in four games, and would fail to net on just one of their four away outings. Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1.
