Preview: Barring a shock result in the other game in Group A, this is a match up to decide which team consoles themselves with the consolation of finishing third behind El Salvador and Mexico. Goals look likely to be at a premium as Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago do battle inside Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Guatemala – Decade long wait for Gold Cup win goes on?

For a side that shouldn’t really be here, after their initial qualifying efforts went unrewarded following a 10-9 penalty shootout loss to Guadeloupe, it will come as little surprise to see Los Chapines toiling. Curacao’s withdrawal was Guatemala’s gain, however. Not that they’ve seized on their opportunity so far, losing 2-0 and 3-0 to El Salvador and Mexico, respectively, to sit stone last in Group A.

Guatemala scored just the one goal the last time they featured in a Gold Cup, which came against Trinidad & Tobago in a 3-1 loss in 2015. They finished bottom of the group on that occasion, and will so again unless they end on a winning note. However, this would require something this team has only managed twice in its last six matches (W1 D3 L2), which is find the back of the opposition net.

On an additional note, both teams to score backers should be wary. Just one of the eleven Guatemala games in 2021 produced a goal apiece for both teams, with that being the 1-1 draw with Guadeloupe in Gold Cup qualifying. Four of their last six games, meanwhile, concluded with no more than two goals scored.

Trinidad & Tobago – Soca Warriors still in with outside chance of progressing?

As in 2019, the Soca Warriors Gold Cup journey will be halted in the group stage unless something truly extraordinary occurs during the third and final set of Group A fixtures. With a three point deficit to make up on second place Mexico, Angus Eve, the Trinidad & Tobago head coach, would need his side to beat Guatemala – likely be a wide margin – while also hoping the reigning champions lose against El Salvador.

In reality, this is a match up that decides third place in the group. And while they were soundly beaten 2-0 in their second Gold Cup outing by El Salvador, the surprise point garnered from the goalless draw with Mexico means they only need to avoid defeat in this final encounter. Having lost none of the previous seven competitive meetings between these sides, the consolation of a third place finish is achievable.

Just like Guatemala, though, putting the ball in the back of the net has proven a formidable obstacle until now. This is nothing new, unfortunately, as despite a 6-1 hammering of Montserrat in qualifying for the tournament, goals have been scarce. The Soca Warriors haven’t managed more than a single goal in six of nine games this year.

Guatemala Vs Trinidad & Tobago Betting Advice

Before 2021, Trinidad & Tobago were in a perpetual state of crisis out on the pitch. Between October 2018 and February 2021, the Soca Warriors won just one of seventeen games (D4 L12) having failed to score at all in all but four. Consequently they came into this tournament ranked 103 in the world, only three shy of their lowest ever mark. So their uninspiring tournament thus far hasn’t really come as a surprise.

Guatemala Vs Trinidad & Tobago – Key Facts:

  • Neither team has scored a Gold Cup goal so far. Guatemala lost to nil to both El Salvador and Mexico – 2-0 and 3-0 respectively – while Trinidad & Tobago claimed their sole point in a goalless draw with Mexico.
  • Guatemala (FIFA Ranking 127) have one win from their last six games (D3 L2), scoring no goals in four of these encounters.
  • Trinidad & Tobago (103) had managed three wins in six prior to the tournament, but have been on a downward spiral for a significant period.

Guatemala sit 24 places further down in the most recently updated FIFA rankings but did, at least, come into the tournament with some momentum behind them, having been unbeaten in ten beforehand. A lot of them were against middling sides but they were at least making some positive headway. So I would be inclined to oppose the favourites here, with the draw, in a contest light on goal potential, making most appeal.
