Guimaraes Preview – More woes against one of the top teams?

Those of an English persuasion might recall watching this team giving Arsenal an almighty scare at Emirates Stadium during the Europa League group stage, scoring twice in North London but denied a memorable outcome after conceding deep into stoppage time. They would eventually bow out in last place although not before holding the Premier League side to a score draw in Portugal.

Dropping out of Europe has its perks, however. With only the league to focus their attentions on, Guimaraes (6th – W10 D7 L7) would win their last three Primeira Liga fixtures – beating Aves (0-2), Tondela (2-0 and Pacos Ferreira (1-2) – at the point at which the league came to a hold. European qualification remains entirely plausible as well, needing to make up five points on fourth-placed Sporting.

That deficit would be cut down significantly where they to claim their seventh home win of 2019/20 (W6 D2 L4 overall at home). However, their record versus the better teams, namely those currently in the top-four, has been extremely poor losing all five such encounters, including all three staged at their Estadio d. Alfonso Henriques stadium.

Sporting Lisbon Preview – Another miserable evening in Guimaraes?

That Sporting Lisbon (4th – W13 D3 L8) were also seen competing in this season’s group stage of the Europa League is far less surprising. Nor was the fact they fared considerably better than their compatriots, comfortably qualifying out of a tricky section only to be knocked out on aggregate by Turkish side Basaksehir. They, too, now have only the remainder of the league season to concentrate on.

And concentrate they must, if they wish to avoid missing out on a top-four finish that would secure them another shot at Europe next term. Four points clear of Rio Ave in fifth, and five better off than Thursday’s opponents, Sporting coach Ruben Amorim will no doubt be mindful of the potential repercussions this fixture poses – it’s one that has been problematic recently, winning once in five previous visits to Guimaraes (W1 D2 L2).

Adding to their concerns must be previous performances away from home this season, which were mixed at best (W5 D3 L4 overall away) and includes no win from their last three said matches (D1 L2), losing 3-1 at Famalicao in their penultimate match before league play was stopped. There is also no more Bruno Fernandes around to bail them out of tough situations, as was often the case before his switch to Man Utd.

Guimaraes Vs Sporting Lisbon Betting Advice

An important fixture in the battle for European qualification. Arguably more so to Guimaraes, who know lose this and there is likely no chance of making the top-four. The hosts have lost all five of this season’s match-ups against the current top four teams, although it could be argued Sporting are the weakest among them especially after losing their star player in January.

Guimaraes Vs Sporting CP – Key Facts

  • The league break stopped Guimaraes, who had won their last three league contests consecutively whilst scoring exactly two goals in each, in their tracks.
  • Conversely, Sporting were toiling on their travels having registered one point from the last nine on offer in away matches.
  • Sporting were 3-1 winners over Guimaraes in Lisbon on Matchday 8; however, the latter have lost just once as the home side in the past five seasons (W2 D2 L1).

Guimaraes were going well at the point in which football stopped, winning three consecutive league games. Meanwhile, Sporting were streaky and without an away win in three recent attempts (D1 L2).
