Haiti – On the brink and needing the three points?

2019 Gold Cup semi-finalists Haiti would have come away from their opening match of the tournament against USA with mixed feelings. Reasonably satisfied with their general level of performance, which was dogged throughout, but a touch frustrated they weren’t able to make better use of some presentable scoring opportunities that could have garnered a famous outcome at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

In truth, Haiti were slightly fortunate to escape with only a slender defeat. USA were the aggressors all game, and had it not been for a combination of woodwork (twice) and goalkeeping heroics – with some outlets handing the Man of the Match award to Miami FC’s Brian Sylvestre for a number of excellent close-range stops – the final scoreline would have had a more realistic look to it.

Next up for Les Grenadiers is a third meeting of 2021 with Canada. In fact, between the Canadians and USA, they are responsible for all three of the occasions Haiti didn’t win in eight competitive games so far this year. It is a trend they simply must reverse here, else a repeat of their semi-final run from two years ago – when they ousted Canada 3-2 in the last eight – will be all but impossible to replicate.

Canada – Defensively sound Canucks targeting early progression?

The Canucks needed to dig deep early on in their opening match of the tournament, as Martinique briefly threatened a shock in Kansas City when capitalising on an uncharacteristic defensive error from the Canadians to take a 1-0 lead inside ten minutes. That goal snapped a streak of five consecutive clean sheets for John Herdman’s side, who will have been pleased with the response from his side thereafter.

That early setback sparked an almost immediate response from Canada, who were 3-1 to the good with less than half-hour of the contest gone. It was plain sailing from that moment on, although they still found time for a fourth late on. That a seventh win from as many games in 2021, including a couple of tidy World Cup Qualifying victories (1-0 away, 3-0 here in the States) against Haiti only last month.

Meanwhile, any early fears regarding star man Alphonso Davies’ absence were also allayed with an impressive performance on the left flank from Tajon Buchanan. The New England Revolution winger’s direct running caused countless problems and the 22-year-old had a big hand in the second and third goals. He could have a big say should Canada successfully avenge that quarter-final exit to Haiti from 2019.

Haiti Vs Canada Betting Advice

The third head-to-head of the year sees Haiti desperately hoping to avoid not only a third straight loss to Canada but also an early exit from the tournament. Lose this, coupled with a USA win elsewhere, and it will be curtains for the 2019 semi-finalists. Les Grenadiers needn’t look too far for inspiration, though: it was at the last Gold Cup that they fought back from 2-0 down to oust the Canadians from the quarter-finals.

Haiti Vs Canada – Key Facts:

  • This will mark a third meeting between the sides in 2021. Canada prevailing both times, winning 1-0 in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and 3-0 in the United States.
  • With those scorelines in mind, only one of the last seven head-to-heads – Haiti’s 3-2 win in the quarter-finals of the last Gold Cup – have seen both teams on the score sheet.
  • From their combined 15 games played in 2021, only four produced Both Teams To Score. This includes their pair of meetings from last month, which Canada won to nil both times.

Canada have made enormous strides since that last tournament, though, and they would have had a genuine shot at the trophy with Alphonso Davies fit and healthy. They are a perfect seven from seven in 2021, with five coming by way of a clean sheet, so are going great guns. Haiti did limit USA to a single goal a few days ago, however, and are seldom breached more than once defensively (once in last nine games).
