Hamburg – Third time lucky for Bundesliga favourites?
Following the club’s first ever demotion from the Bundesliga at the end of 2017/18, the sight of Hamburg (W14 D8 L5) fighting it out for a return to the top division has become a regular occurrence – and it is no different third time around. After missing out on promotion by the slenderest of margins in each of the previous two campaigns, are Die Rothosen all set to finally return to the league many feel they belong?
The answer to that is we simply don’t know. As they were in 2018/19 and 2019/20, Hamburg are prominent: ahead of Greuther Furth on goal difference in second but trailing frontrunners Bochum by four points. A four match unbeaten streak (W2 D2) means Daniel Thioune and his team are approaching the final strait in encouraging form, while they are unbeaten at Volksparkstadion since early December.
Although they are currently eight home games without incurring a loss (W5 D2), Hamburg have only managed one win here in their most recent three attempts. Held by fellow promotion rivals Greuther Furth and Holstien Kiel, who are currently third and fourth respectively, before a Tim Leibold brace condemned seventh place Heidenheim to a 2-0 defeat in the north of Germany.
Darmstadt – Struggling visitors will pose a threat?
It was around this stage last season Darmstadt (W9 D5 L13) found themselves stalking the promotion hopefuls in Bundesliga 2, a surprising contender for a return to the Bundesliga where they enjoyed successive seasons between 2014 and 2016. That certainly isn’t the case on this occasion, and in fact their status at this level is far from assured, especially after slumping to a 13th defeat of the season last time.
Just three teams, all of whom are currently locked in a battle for survival, have accumulated more losses thus far than Markus Anfang’s side. The latest coming at their Merck-Stadion am Bollenfalltor, succumbing 2-1 to a Dusseldorf side recently relegated from the Bundesliga. That a first loss in four games (W2 D1 prior), with Darmstadt previously enjoying their best period since the early weeks of the season.
That recent setback leaves them close enough to danger to be concerned: six points clear of the relegation play-off berth and seven from automatic relegation. This despite notching more goals (43 in 23 games) than any side in the bottom half of the table (those from ninth down). However, only the bottom two of Sandhausen and Wurzburger Kickers have shipped more at the other end of the pitch than their 46.
