Hamburg Preview – Every fixture now a must win?
Just five more games remain for most teams in Germany’s second tier. For Hamburg (3rd – W13 D10 L6) to return to the Bundesliga after two seasons on the outside, a result or two has to fall in their favour during what remains of the campaign. This whilst also ensuring any slip-ups of their own are kept to an absolute minimum, meaning three points are a must at Volksparkstadion on Monday.
Fortunately, Die Rothosen are formidable on their own patch, or at least have been for much of the season so far, winning 10 of 14 said matches (W10 D2 L2). Stuttgart, whom they hope to dislodge from second spot soon, the only team to have registered more points from home matches in 2019/20. Last week’s 3-2 win there over relegation candidates Wehen Wiesbaden was, however, a little too close for comfort.
The latter victory a first for Dieter Hecking and his players in four fixtures (W1 D2 L1) since resuming the 2. Bundesliga campaign last month, and it is due to their initial lethargy that Hamburg have dropped from second to two points off it. The hope, perhaps, is that a recent taste of success will inspire more, which is no means guaranteed – after all, that was only a second win in their past eight league games (W2 D3 L3).

Promotion was still on the cards when this team returned to action last month. Unfortunately, that appears to no longer be the case. Last week’s last-gasp defeat at home to leaders Arminia Bielefeld – a second successive 2-1 defeat – has simply left them with too much work to do in the final five rounds after claiming only four of twelve points available to them since the resumption.
The picture now is Holstein-Kiel (8th – W10 D8 L11) must make up eleven points on the promotion play-off position, which happens to be occupied by Monday’s opponents. Expecting them to reduce that deficit with victory in Hamburg requires a leap of faith, however, with this team too inconsistent of late, leaking far too many goals (a minimum of two in all four fixtures since the restart) and not winning away from home in three attempts.
Where this team does excel, though, is in attack, with only the current top-three sides averaging more across the season so far. More impressive than anything, Holstein-Kiel have scored in each of their previous twelve contests on the road, doing so at least twice on an impressive eight occasions. Goals are therefore expected, with 80% of Holstein-Kiel’s away fixtures featuring at least three goals.
