Hamburg – Annual choke in full swing?

It is happening again. Since they were demoted from the top tier for the very first time in their history in 2018, Hamburg (W14 D10 L7) have finished fourth in successive seasons in Bundesliga 2, missing out on a promotion play-off berth by a single point both times. Currently occupying fourth place with only three rounds left, the only discernible difference on this occasion is that they could miss out by a wider margin.

Die Rothosen (52 points) must win all their remaining fixtures – against sides currently 12th, 16th and 17th, so their run-in is favourable – if they are to have any chance of making up the ground on Holstien Kiel (56), Greuther Furth (57) and Bochum (60). Any less and a third term at this level awaits. Three points on Monday, versus the side who held them in the reverse fixture, are therefore of critical importance.

However, there is little that would indicate a win is indeed imminent. They have drawn their last two match-ups 1-1, the latest at home to Karlsruher which made it one win in five at Volksparkstadion (D3 L2), having won only twice, home or away, since the beginning of February (D6 L4). Meanwhile, each of their last five league games concluded with Horst Hrubesch’s side having scored as well as conceded.

Draw & Both Teams To Score

Nurnberg – Disappointing season ending on a high?

Regardless of how these final few rounds materialise, Nurnburg (W10 D10 L11) know a third consecutive term in Germany’s second tier awaits. That has to be considered a positive, though, considering the predicament they found themselves after Christmas. Fourteenth and just a point clear of the relegation places come the end of January, the Bavarians have since distanced themselves from any trouble.

As such, Der Ruhmreiche are actually finishing the campaign stronger than most. Now ten points clear of danger, Nurnburg boast one defeat in ten league games and will approach the last three fixtures unbeaten in seven (W3 D4). Taking points from the teams currently second, third and sixth during this period, having held the team Hamburg are desperately hoping to catch, Holstien Kiel, to a 1-1 draw last time out.

Head coach Robert Klaus does share something in common with his opposite number, though, in that his team also has a penchant for scoring and conceding with seven of their past eight Bundesliga 2 contests going this way. Meanwhile 1-0 victory over Erzgebirge Aue in their latest away outing made it one defeat from the last six on the road (W3 D2), the exception their 3-1 loss to Fortuna Dusseldorf in early March.

Hamburg Vs Nurnburg Betting Advice

These clubs boast an abundance of top-flight experience between them, however, neither are likely to make the step up to Bundesliga football anytime soon. Hamburg retain faint hopes this time around but are implored to win all their remaining fixtures whilst praying the teams above them slip up. For a team which has only won two of its last twelve league games, their promotion hopes appear bleak at best.

Hamburg Vs Nurnburg – Key Facts:

  • The teams drew 1-1 in their first Bundesliga 2 meeting of 2020-21, in January, a result which halted a five-match winning streak in this fixture for Hamburg.
  • Fourth-place Hamburg are winless in five league games (D3 L2) having won once at home in their last five attempts (W1 D3 L1).
  • Now up in 12, Nurnburg are currently without defeat in seven Bundesliga 2 games (W3 D4) having lost just one of their past six away matches (W3 D2 L1).

Whereas Hamburg are in their customary end-of-season slump/choke, Nurnburg are finishing strongly. The visitors arrive at Volksparkstadion – a ground the hosts are seeking only a second win in the last six outings here – unbeaten in seven having lost just once on the road in six. A bet on Both Teams to Score (6/10 PaddyPower) might also prove shrewd: it landed in five of Hamburg’s last six matches, and all but one of Nurnburg’s last eight.
