Hapoel Be’er Sheva will be hoping they can go one step better in this year’s Champions League after falling at the very last hurdle before the group stages last season, when they crashed out of the competition to Scottish champions, Celtic.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva went on a solid run through the qualifying rounds last season as they collected wins over Sheriff 3-2 on aggregate and a momentous 1-0 win over Greek side Olympiakos in the second and third qualifying rounds respectively, before falling to Celtic in the play-offs.
But tonight’s hosts come into this season’s second qualifying round having captured the Ligat ha’Al as they pipped Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of the regular season, and then really pushed on through the Championship Round to take the overall title.
Visitors Honved were pushed to the very last day of their domestic season in Hungary by eventual runners-up Videoton as they were level on points before the last match of the season, but Videoton possessed a better goal difference.
Honved beat Videoton 1-0 on the last day to take the league title which was largely thanks to their impressive home form which saw them win 12 of their 16 league matches. However, Honved suffered six defeats on their travels during the domestic season, and this poor away form could be their undoing again in Israel this evening.
This will be Honed’s very first appearance in the Champions League and it’ll be interesting to see how they compare against a side that have tasted european club football before, with an element of success to boot.
