The final game for these two before the split is the biggest of all – an Edinburgh derby. Hearts will be hoping to confine rivals Hibs to a bottom six position as they look to cement third place.

Hearts – Can Hearts continue their recent unbeaten run and stretch it to seven?

The end is in sight for Hearts and their quest to secure third spot. The Gorgie club have been in control of that position for the vast majority of the season and have stretched their lead in recent weeks. A five game unbeaten run in the Premiership sees them now 14 points ahead of Dundee United. It means depending on results they could even clinch it this weekend if they can win this one.

Another incentive, if they needed it for an Edinburgh derby, is that taking the three points will deal a hammer blow to Hibs’ hopes of finishing in the top six which would be huge bragging rights considering it was their rivals who were best of the rest last season.

Unsurprisingly, only Celtic and Rangers have a better home record than Hearts who have recorded 10 victories in the league at Tynecastle, losing only three. More recently, they have won five of the last seven and keeping clean sheets in four of them.
He may not win the club’s player of the season because of the form of Craig Gordon but Barry McKay has been in excellent form for most of the campaign but particularly the last few weeks. The winger has just signed a contract extension as a result.

Hibernian Preview – Are Hibs capable of getting the win they need which would confirm a top six spot?

Hibs come into this match knowing that anything less than three points means they are relying on results elsewhere to be in the top six come the split. The Easter Road club are currently sixth but both Livingston and Aberdeen would leapfrog them if they win their matches and Hibs draw, and St Mirren could also replace them should Hibs lose and they get all three points on Sunday.

A lot of permutations, but Shaun Maloney’s team can take all of that uncertainty out the equation if they can win this game meaning nobody below them could overtake them.

Winning has been a problem for Hibs recently, though. Their last Premiership success was back in February and that remains their only league win this calendar year. It explains their current predicament and why the ambition of consecutive third place finishes have never come close to being realised.

Scoring goals remains the biggest problem for the Hibees. It’s just two goals in their last six league games and even if they do manage to sneak into the top six it is an issue which they have to address in order to progress as a team.

Hearts vs Hibernian Betting Advice

it’s not controversial to suggest that this is the less important of the two clashes between the clubs in the coming week. The teams from the capital will do battle again next Saturday when meeting at Hampden in the Scottish Cup semi-final. The prospect of silverware outweighs anything this league fixture can bring but it will be fiercely competitive regardless.

There has been nothing to split Hearts and Hibs in their previous two meetings this season. Both of the matches have finished goalless. Hearts haven’t actually won an Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle since 2018 so the home support will feel it is overdue.

Key Facts –  Hearts vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • Hearts are unbeaten in their last six league games and have opened up a 14 points lead over fourth in the process
  • The only result which guarantees Hibs a place in the top six is a victory (no wins in their last five)
  • These two will also do battle at Hampden next weekend as they go in search of a Scottish Cup final spot

Anybody expecting goals before reading this preview will probably be disappointed. These games don’t lend themselves to attacking and expansive football and Hibs’ recent form only strengthens the belief that this will be another low-scoring affair.
