Hellas Verona Preview – Hosts to build on positive start?

In theory, Hellas Verona should find the step up to Serie A the most challenging of the three promoted sides after earning their promotion through the play-offs. It is they, however, who have made the brighter start. A return of four points from the opening two fixtures is currently good enough to occupy a share of sixth position, as this team quickly sets about avoiding relegation.

The season didn’t exactly begin in the most positive of manners, though. Within 15 minutes of their opening game at home to Bologna, the ‘Gialloblu’ (Yellow and Blues) found themselves trailing to a goal conceded from the penalty spot. The response from Verona was swift, however, with Portuguese midfielder Miguel Veloso restoring parity not long before half-time. In the end they would hold on for a valuable point, though it was completely undeserved on the balance of play (xG: Verona 0.11 – BOL 1.88)

If they were fortunate to register anything from their first encounter, then three points collected in the very next outing were thoroughly deserved on the back of a vastly improved showing away to a Lecce side that accumulated 14 more points in Serie B last term. The victory was secured towards the very end, when Matteo Pessina popped up with the only goal of a contest which Verona carved out the better chances in (xG: LEC 1.05 – VER 1.88).

They are back at home now, the setting for that rather insipid performance first time out against Bologna. That particular outcome means Verona have secured one win in their previous six Serie A/B home games (W1 D3 L2). Rather more impressive is the fact that only once in their last fourteen league games as the home side have they failed to score.

AC Milan Preview – Away woes a cause for concern?

The Serie A season begun on a dampener for AC Milan, whose lacklustre performance away at Udinese on the opening weekend resulted in a 1-0 defeat. It was a game in which they created very few scoring opportunities, creating chances equating to only 0.64xG according to Infolgol, meaning there could be few complaints regarding the final outcome. It was a much improved display next time out, however.

Hakan Calhanoglu may have struck the only goal of the game to condemn newly-promoted Brescia to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the San Siro (xG: MIL 1.84 – BRE 0.86), but it was nothing less than AC deserved based on the quality of chances created. The problem now is transferring this type of performance into their away matches, something that proved their undoing in the last campaign, but especially towards the latter stages when pushing for a top four finish.

Despite finishing 2018-19 strongly to win their final four matches in a run that included slim margin of victories away to Fiorentina (0-1) and SPAL (2-3), it was their failure to register more than a single point from the four away fixtures which directly preceded this spell (D1 L3) that cost them big time. Throw in that loss to Udinese and it makes for two wins in their last seven away Serie A encounters (W2 D1 L4).

The club did, however, make a number of smart additions to the playing personnel over the summer and the expectation is that manager Marco Giampaolo can steer them in the direction of the European places. Consistency could be an issue in these early weeks and months, though, particularly away from home.

Verona V AC Milan Key Facts:

  • Verona have taken four points from their first two Serie A matches (W1 D1), but have won just one of their previous six league games at home (W1 D3 L2).
  • AC Milan have made a mixed start to the season (W1 D0 L1) and have won only twice in their previous seven away Serie A matches (W2 D1 L4).
  • Both of the most recent two Serie A meetings with Verona as the hosts were won by the home side, who were 3-0 victors in 2017 and 2-1 winners in 2016.

Betting Summary

Down in Serie B last season, Verona weren’t the most reliable on home soil (W8 D7 L3, GF30 GA22). Nine other sides would register more points in their home fixtures, with an astonishing 72% of Verona’s producing both teams to score in a league not exactly famed for its goals. An unbeaten start to this season (W1 D1) should ensure there is a spring in their step ahead of this exciting match-up.

AC Milan would barely fail in their mission to finish in the top four last season. To avoid similar disappointment this time around, winnable fixtures such as these simply have to be converted into three points. Unfortunately, the Rossoneri continue to baffle on their travels, with that poor display at Udinese on the opening weekend a fourth away defeat in their previous seven such games (W2 D1 L4).

In spite of their well-documented troubles on the road, this is a game AC Milan are fancied to win. Especially if Verona perform anything like how they did on their only home outing so far, when barely creating a chance despite somehow drawing with Bologna. An alternative could be goals, though, with Verona adept at finding ways of scoring when at home. The value, however, could rest in an AC Milan victory with both teams to score at 3/1 with Boylesports.
