The Bundesliga comes out it’s winter break this weekend and there’s a cracker in store in the capital. A rejuvenated Hertha host Bayern Munich with Jurgen Klinsmann looking to get one over his former team.

Hertha Berlin Preview – Will Hertha’s improvement under Klinsmann extend to defeating the champions?

Jurgen Klinsmann has been boss of Hertha since the end of November but his influence on the team has already been significant. Since losing at home to Borussia Dortmund in his first match, Hertha have went on to collect eight points from four games. That may not sound anything remarkable but for a struggling side to go unbeaten for that run of matches, all of which were against top half teams, is an indication they are going in the right direction under this regime.

 

Hertha are also now backed with significant financial clout from their new owners and the names they are being linked with are exciting. As yet however, there has not been an influx of new players which may not be a bad thing as Klinsmann looks to continue developing this group of players with a view to strengthening more seriously in the summer.

Bayern Munich Preview – Can Bayern start as they mean to go on this year and make it four wins in a row?

The first half of the season was eventful for Bayern to say the least. The champions eventually parted company with Niko Kovac following some dismal results. They did, however, top their Champions League group winning all six matches in their section. Bayern went into the winter break in third place in the Bundesliga, four points behind leaders RB Leipzig. It looks set to be the most exciting and competitive title race in Germany for years and one Bayern will be hoping to use their experience.

Hans Flick has been given the head coaching job on a permanent basis, or at least until the end of the season when Bayern will look to reassess it. He’s definitely overseen improvement but there will be some doubt that he has the capabilities to get the team over the line in what is a very different Bundesliga this time around.

If Bayern are to clinch yet another title then a lot will depend on Robert Lewandowski. He’s on course to have his best ever season with 19 goals in 17 games so far.

 

Bayern always tend to be better for the winter break and I expect that to be the case here. Whilst Hertha have shown improvement this still feels a step too far against a team who were very good in the three games before Christmas.

The betting odds on an away win are prohibitive, however, so take a win for Bayern and for there to be at least three goals in the game, as there have been in Bayern’s last six away matches.
