Hertha Berlin Preview – The Old Lady simply too inconsistent?
Manager Bruno Labbadia will hope that his Hertha Berlin side are able to pick up from where they left off before the recent break, when the club from the German capital produced a dominant display at WWK Arena in a 3-0 away win over FC Augsburg. The latter could prove a positive omen, too, with Augsburg one of just two teams so far this season to have beaten Saturday’s opponents Borussia Dortmund.
Victory last time was thoroughly deserved, limiting an Augsburg side which boasted five goals in their previous three home games to no goals and only 0.29 xG. Meanwhile, Hertha moved on to 13 Bundesliga goals for the season – only the current top five have more – and, more importantly, doubled their tally of wins for 2020/21 in one foul swoop as they climbed back to within three points of the top half of the table.
Hertha Berlin were previously without a win in five (D1 L4), though, since thrashing Werder Bremen 4-1 on the road on the opening weekend. Therefore assuming they have turned a corner would be premature. They did, however, produce their strongest defensive display of 2020/21 last time out, but have still shipped more goals (13) than all bar the bottom two whilst remaining winless at their Olympiastadion (D1 L2).
Borussia Dortmund Preview – Positives to be had from losing Der Klassiker?
With clean sheets in five of seven Bundesliga outings in 2020/21, and a total of only five goals allowed, it is fair to say Borussia Dortmund are doing a lot right with their defensive actions. The problem for Lucien Favre, then, is that his team have gone on to lose on each instance of them conceding in a league game this season, a worrying trend they will have to buck if they are to sustain a meaningful title push.
Speaking of the title, Dortmund suffered their first telling blow to date when losing the first Der Klassiker of the campaign. There was little wrong with the effort or performance of the players, though, who gave everything for the cause, created enough chances and generally did enough to warrant victory, but were ultimately defeated 3-2 by Bayern at Signal Iduna Park to fall three points behind the league leaders.
Fortunately, a favourable fixture – Dortmund winning the last three Bundesliga meetings with Hertha Berlin – greets them on the other side of an international break that at least brought some benefits, namely Erling Haaland receiving an unexpected two weeks off with Norway not in action. The Norwegian was especially wasteful against Bayern, despite netting for the sixth time in the league (all at home) this season.
