Finnish side, HJK Helsinki bring an important 2-1 lead into their first round qualifying second leg against Faroe Islands outfit, Vikingur, when the two teams meet again at the Telia 5G -areena on Tuesday night.
Last week’s overall result went pretty much as expected as the Finnish club, HJK, have been impressive so far this season in their domestic Veikkausliiga, as they hold a commanding 10-point lead at the top of the division ahead of second placed RoPS Rovaneimi.
Throw in a seven match winning streak at home in the league as well, prior to tonight’s clash, and you can see why they’re favourites to not only win this second leg, but progress with ease into the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
Forward, Klauss (13 goals) is the most likely anytime goalscorer, and is well supported by Valencic (5 goals) and Mensah (4 goals).
Onto Vikingur, and last week’s first leg defeat to HJK ended a run of four straight wins on the trot for the visitors who had previously chalked up league wins over TB/FCS/Royn, NSI, 07 Vestur and EB/Streymur in their domestic Meistaradeilden.
However, it’s been a topsy-turvy campaign for Vikingur to date as they sit in third spot in the top flight but some 11 points adrift of current league leaders, HB, while a dismal run of four defeats on the trot during May would have done little for their confidence too.
Vikingur hold a W2 D1 L2 record to date in their limited Champions League history, and although they scored last week, I believe they’ll be out of their depth when they travel to Helsinki this Tuesday night.
