Hoffenheim – Back to basics after Bayern loss?

Not many visiting teams depart Allianz Arena boasting superior underlying numbers, but that was true of Hoffenheim (W6 D4 L9) who shaded Matchday 19’s contest with the record champions from an xG viewpoint. Not that it did them any favours. Aside from a sweeping counter-attack before half-time which resulted in Andrej Kramaric’s 13th Bundesliga goal of 2020-21, it was an outing best forgotten.

That 4-1 loss to Bayern was their first defeat in the league for four matches, with Sebastian Hoeness’ side collecting seven points from nine beforehand. Having been held to a goalless draw at home by newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld, Hoffenheim would then registered back-to-back 3-0 scorelines, beating Hertha Berlin in the German capital and struggling FC Koln here in Sinsheim.

So their recent form has been encouraging, if we can turn a blind eye to last week’s uneven performance against the best team in the country. They were sloppy at the back and profligate in attack, which can sometimes happen against the strongest sides. Unfortunately, Frankfurt are another strong outfit and a club against whom they have lost all five Bundesliga meetings since a 1-0 home win in April 2017.

Eintracht Frankfurt – Eagles displaying top-four credentials?

Up in to fourth and nestled in the Champions League places, Eintracht Frankfurt (W8 D9 L2) are going great guns at the moment and, on current form, could take some stopping as they go seeking a sixth consecutive Bundesliga victory against Sunday’s opponents Hoffenheim. All five triumphs saw them emerge victorious by single-goal margins, edging their contest 2-1 at Commerzbank-Arena back in October.

The reverse fixture was one of the few instances whereby Portuguese goal-getter Andre Silva would fail to score this term, with the former AC Milan striker netting in eleven (57%) of his team’s 19 league games thus far. Meanwhile, his overall tally is more than any Frankfurt player has ever had at this stage, bringing up his 15th and 16th strikes of 2020-21 in last week’s come-from-behind 3-1 home win over Hertha Berlin.

The Eagles are now in the midst of a scintillating period of form, returning maximum points in six of their last seven matches while going eight unbeaten (W6 D2) – netting two or more in each of these encounters since last seen losing 2-1 at Wolfsburg in December. So good have they been that nobody, not even leaders Bayern, have earned more points in 2021 than Adi Hutter’s irrepressible charges.

Hoffenheim Vs Eintracht Frankfurt Betting Advice

Flattered by Bayern last time out, Hoffenheim are now presented with the thankless task of curbing the enthusiasm that is currently engulfing Eintracht Frankfurt. The latter are the Bundesliga’s in-form side at the present time, registering six wins in seven and going their last eight matches in the competition unbeaten – netting at least twice throughout this run, which has seen them rise to fourth in the table.

Hoffenheim Vs Frankfurt – Key Facts:

  • Prior to losing 4-1 away at Bayern Munich last time, Hoffenheim had picked up seven points from three games (W2 D1) while keeping three consecutive clean sheets.
  • Six wins in seven Bundesliga matches now for Frankfurt, who are eight unbeaten in the competition, scoring two or more each time, since a 2-1 loss away to Wolfsburg on 11 December.
  • Adi Hutter boasts a flawless record as Frankfurt head coach against Sunday’s opponents, with the 50-year-old overseeing five straight victories against Hoffenheim.

Prior to last week, though, Hoffenheim were in decent form themselves with two wins and a draw. All three games resulted in a clean sheet, perhaps suggesting they have the raw materials to nullify what is currently a well-oiled Frankfurt machine. Yet this is a fixture which favours said form team, with Frankfurt prevailing in all of the past five Bundesliga head-to-heads. However, all five were by a solitary goal.
