Honduras V El Salvador

Wednesday, 26 June 2019 – 03:30 Kick-Off

International: CONCACAF Gold Cup

Pick: El Salvador to WIN – 29/20 Betfair

Preview: The competition might be already over for one of these teams but for the other there is plenty at stake in California, inside the Banc of California Stadium. El Salvador know a win would see them safely through to the quarter-finals but must overcome an already eliminated Honduras.

Recent Trends

  • Honduras are without a win in five games (D2 L3), and have only one win to their name in their last twelve (W1 D4 L7).
  • El Salvador have five wins from their past seven matches (W5 D1 L1), keeping five clean sheets in that time.
  • El Salvador have won only one of the previous six meetings (W1 D2 L3), although it was the most recent: 1-0 in a friendly in 2018.

Honduras Preview

The tournament has been a disaster for Honduras, with their failure to acquire any points from games with Jamaica (2-3) and Curaçao (0-1) leaving them not only pointless but also heading home with a game still left to play. Quite how much enthusiasm remains in the tank for this final fixture remains to be seen but on the basis of their year so far, the answer may not be a lot.

In fairness to them, they’ve been mightily unlucky. The opening contest with Jamaica was essentially an away fixture, with it being held in the Jamaican capital of Kingston. There wasn’t very much between the two sides either, with both teams creating opportunities in one of the more entertaining games of these finals so far.

As for the loss to Curaçao, Honduras had over 30 attempts on goal and forced the keeper into more than a dozen saves. A goal against the run of play from Leandro Bacuna was cruel on them, although it did typify their year. It is now no win in five (D2 L3), which includes a 7-0 mauling to Brazil. If we go back even further, it is one win in their last 12 (W1 D4 L7).

The fact Los Catrachos failed to score in three of those 2019 games doesn’t really bode well ahead of facing a defence that hasn’t conceded very many goals of late – none at all, in fact, so far in this tournament.

Honduras V El Salvador Both Teams to Score

El Salvador Preview

Four points from a possible six means El Salvador control their own destiny ahead of their remaining group game. Victory would see them progress into the knockout round of the Gold Cup for the fourth time in the last five tournaments, but anything less and it would leave the door open for Curaçao – who are only a point further back in third – to potentially sneak in at their expense.

No shortage of incentive for La Selecta then, who find themselves in such an empowering position courtesy of two hard-fought results against Curaçao (W1-0) and Jamaica (0-0). If they were to secure the win they need, it would continue what has been a tremendous year so far for the team ranked 69 in the world. It could even see them top the group depending on the outcome of the other game.

When you include the results from this tournament, it is now one loss in seven games (W5 D1 L1). Some notable triumphs over Jamaica (in a March CONCACAF Nations League game), Haiti (1-0) and even South Americans Peru (2-0) in that sequence. Which is made all the more impressive by the number of clean sheets kept: five in all, with four of their wins being accompanied by a shutout.

So the basis of any potential success in this match will likely depend upon another strong performance from the defence. Especially as they aren’t the most prolific of scorers themselves: just two scored in their last four games.

Betting Summary

Form can naturally have a big impact on the confidence and rhythm of a team, and here we have two teams in sharply contrasting forms. Honduras are without a win in five games in 2019 and must feel the world is against them after the Curaçao loss. Whereas El Salvador have been grinding out positive results and have tasted defeat only once in their last seven in all competitions.

Honduras could potentially be very demoralised heading into a dead game as far as they are concerned. Therefore we simply have to plump for the team with all the motivation and momentum. That team is evidently El Salvador, who know only a win will assure them of a place in the quarter-finals.
