Honduras – Recent displays point to improved Gold Cup showing?

Los Catrachos endured disappointment two years ago, eliminated at the end of the group stage for a second time in the past three tournaments. Especially as they had reached the semi-finals in each of the previous three. Their downfall last time was in their initial lethargy, losing the first two matches by the odd goal before a 4-0 rout of El Salvador proved too little too late for the one-time runners-up.

The fixtures have aligned this time, however, allowing them to build up steam ahead of more taxing assignments. First up Grenada, the lowest ranked side here and a country Honduras retain a dominant record against, having won a pair of previous meetings by an 11-1 aggregate. Tails will also be wagging following a recent third-place Nations League finish, going down valiantly in the semi-finals to USA.

Having also played out a goalless stalemate in a pre-tournament friendly with Gold Cup favourites Mexico, this team has shown an ability to raise their game for more seasoned opponents – a trait that should serve them well should they reach the latter stages. Yet it also continued a concerning trend which has seen them unable to win any of five encounters (D3 L2) so far this year inside the allotted 90 minutes of action.

Grenada – Third Gold Cup to go the same way as the others?

While they may not be the most inexperienced side competing at this summer’s tournament, with that dubious honour bestowed upon debutants Suriname, this is still something of a rarity seeing the Spice Boys back in Gold Cup action. Former Canadian interim manager Michael Findlay is the man tasked with inspiring a maiden Gold Cup victory – or draw, for that matter – in this their third participation.

They cannot possibly fare worse than they did in 2009 and 2011, can they? Both times they were drawn alongside Honduras, as they are here. Both times they were emphatically beaten by Honduras, 4-0 and 7-1. And both times resulted in them losing all three group games, scoring only one goal – a consolation against Honduras – but conceding 25, at a rate of more than four per game, across both editions.

Dare we say the writing is on the wall. Results in 2021 are hardly the sort to inspire a surge in last minute confidence either. Aside from a narrow 1-0 victory over the US Virgin Islands (a team ranked 207 out of 210), it has been nothing but losses for the lowest ranking side (160) at the tournament. Scoring one goal in succumbing to the might of El Salvador, Antigua & Barbuda, and Montserrat.

Honduras Vs Grenanda Betting Advice

As they did in their only previous Gold Cup appearances, in 2009 and 2011, Grenada renew acquaintances with Honduras. They’ll certainly hope plenty has changed since a decade ago, when they were resoundingly dispatched 4-0 and 7-1 by Los Catrachos. The reality, however, is that this appears another uphill struggle, with a huge gulf of 97 places between them in the most recently updated FIFA rankings.

Honduras Vs Grenada – Key Facts:

  • This Group D opener marks only the third ever meeting between these countries. Both were at Gold Cups, though, Honduras emerging 4-0 and 7-1 victors in 2009 and 2011.
  • Neither approach the tournament in winning form. Honduras winless in five matches (D3 L2) in 2021 thus far while Grenada lost three of their four match-ups this year.
  • Honduras‘ performances coming into the tournament are of a much higher level, however, pushing both USA (0-1) and Mexico (0-0) close last month.

Grenada did notch their sole Gold Cup goal against Honduras in 2011 though, albeit that served only to antagonise their opponents who, after falling behind early, went and scored seven after recovering to lead 3-1 at the break. Honduras haven’t actually won a game so far this year (D3 L2) but did show up well in recent encounters with Costa Rica, Mexico and USA. This should therefore be relatively straightforward.
