Hull City V Sunderland: Bent’s hunt for the Golden Boot

Hull City V Sunderland: Darren Bent First Goalscorer @ 6.50 Coral

Saturday, 24th April, 15:00 (GMT) – English Premier League

There’s an Englishman leading the way in the scoring chart and unfortunately it’s not one of our personal favourites, Darren Bent. The former Tottenham flop has been converted into a scoring force at Sunderland under the guidance of Steve Bruce and has netted 23 times in 35 league appearances. Bent is now just three goals behind Wayne Rooney as the race for the Premiership Golden Boot really heats up now that Rooney is still trying to shrug off his ankle injury and Drogba is nursing a Hernia. Of course, it remains a big ask for Bent to catch the pair of them and land the Golden Boot as he would need a good four or five just to be competitive but the World Cup hopeful, who has yet to even be called up by Fabio Capello despite being England’s second hottest striking property according to the Premier League scoring leaderboard, will give it his best shot in a bid to end the season as the league’s most prolific striker and in the process, catch the eye of one grumpy looking Italian.

A trip to Hull seems like a pretty decent opportunity if you ask me to bolster your striking credentials against a team seemingly destined for relegation while Sunderland comfortably beat the Tigers 4-1 earlier in the season at The Stadium of Light in a game where Darren Bent scored twice. Bent scored the opener that day after just 13 minutes and has had a habit of scoring very early on in some of Sunderland’s recent matches. However, like Sunderland on the whole, Bent hasn’t quite been as effective on the road and will need to break a baron three game run of Saturday if he’s to score. Not since his opener at Fratton Park against Portsmouth back in February has Bent found the net in an away clash but Sunderland have endured some difficult away ventures ever since; Arsenal and Liverpool to more notable clashes.

Hull, well, they’re in a whole different league, and will be next season by the looks of things. The Tigers are a team in serious trouble after a run of four games without a win, while their home form doesn’t appear to be their lifesaver as well as they’ve conceded six in their last two home fixtures. That will be music to the ears of a prominent Darren Bent as he aims to dethrone Rooney from the top of the scoring charts.

Bent didn’t score Sunderland’s opener in their very last league fixture in a 2-1 win over Burnley at home. He did, however, have the last say from a Sunderland point-of-view as he scored Sunderland’s second and eventual winner and will want to continue where he left on with a early strike at The KC.
