Iceland – Our Boys already in last chance saloon?

Even after rescuing a point in their latest qualifier, forging back from a 2-0 deficit against North Macedonia to earn a 2-2 draw in Reykjavik, the situation remains bleak in Group J from an Iceland (W1 D1 L3) perspective. Arnar Vioarsson has won two of eight matches since assuming the manager’s hot seat in December 2020, and is culpable for a dismal return of four points through five World Cup qualifying games.

It leaves them on the brink, some six points back from an Armenia side confident of bolstering their tally with a win over Liechtenstein that same night. It was against minnows Liechtenstein that Iceland claimed their only three points so far, having otherwise succumbed meekly to Armenia (2-0), Romania (0-2) and Germany (3-0). Meaning ‘Our Boys’ have won just three of their last sixteen fixtures (D2 L11).

Key Stat: Across their past fifteen internationals, there were no fewer than twelve instances whereby Iceland conceded on at least two occasions in a game.

Germany

In only Hansi Flick’s second game in charge, the Germans (W4 L1) went big as they put six past a previously unbeaten Armenia to reclaim top spot in Group J. While the win was perhaps the least surprising aspect, the manner of the performance was awe inspiring. Particularly the ruthless finishing and plethora of scoring opportunities created. Bearing in mind their opponents had been fairly watertight until then.

It means all four victories during this qualifying campaign were without conceding, only doing so in that infamous 2-1 reverse at home to North Macedonia. Suffice to say they are now well on their way to securing safe passage to an 18th consecutive World Cup finals, boasting a two point buffer over Armenia in second. With Die Mannschaft having never lost an away World Cup qualifier, that buffer is only likely to grow.

Key Stat: Germany have recorded back to back clean sheets in the space of three days, after 2-0 and 6-0 wins over Lichtenstein and Armenia. Ending a run of seven games without one.

Iceland Vs Germany Betting Advice

The response to falling 2-0 down at home to North Macedonia last time out was admirable, scoring a couple of unanswered goals to claim a 2-2 draw, but did little to improve the complexion of the group from an Iceland perspective. With six points to make up on second, any more dropped points would likely spell the end of the Nordic nation’s increasingly faint hopes of qualifying for a second successive World Cup.

Iceland Vs Germany – Key Facts:

  • Germany eased to a 3-0 victory the first time these sides faced off in Group J, one of four victories the Germans recorded during this World Cup campaign without conceding.
  • All three Iceland losses in World Cup qualifying thus far were in games which seen them fail to score. Netting only in their qualifiers against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.
  • Iceland have allowed their opponents two or more goals in 12 of their past 15 matches. Meanwhile Germany have scored at least twice in five of their last seven.

Germany were scintillating on Sunday, thrashing Armenia 6-0. They’ve now won four out of five qualifying games, each without conceding, to move back to the top of the group. Seeing as how Iceland’s three losses so far were all to nil, the odds (37/40 with BetVictor) about another Germany Win To Nil seem fair. Yet this is win or bust territory for Iceland, which likely means more risks taken against a dangerous opponent.
