Preview: Three points have been something of a scarcity for these teams of late. Therefore, this could be a pivotal encounter towards the bottom end of South Korea’s K League as bottom side Incheon United entertain eighth-placed Seongnam inside the appropriately named Incheon Football Stadium.

Incheon United Preview – Hosts to finally secure elusive first win of the season?
Once again, Incheon United (12th – W0 D5 L9) have stumbled out of the starting blocks. Last season’s opening thirteen K League 1 fixtures brought about a dismal return of one win – a 2-1 success versus a Gyeongnam side demoted by the end of the campaign – and six points accrued. Fourteen rounds into this term and the club are still searching for its first win, as well as a permanent head coach after recently dismissing the previous incumbent.
It was patently obvious why Lim Wan-Sup, appointed in February, was shown the exit door. No team has fared worse in the early exchanges, with Incheon cut a full eight points adrift of safety little more than a third of the way into the season. They are the only outfit without a win at this stage – everyone else boasting a minimum of three wins so far – while their eight goals, at a rate of 0.57 per game, is also a league-low.
Last week’s encounter with a winless in six Gwangju appeared winnable, however, the Mariners contrived to lose it 3-1 at home, thus extending their own barren run of results. The only positive a fifth straight game in which they managed to locate the opposing team’s net – no mean feat for a side which had failed to score at all in six of their first nine encounters, while they are still to net more than once in any fixture.
Seongnam Preview – Away day specialists primed to deliver again?
Unlike their Sunday opposition, Seongnam (8th – W3 D5 L6) wasted little time getting work done when the 2020 season got underway in the second week of May. By the end of matchday four the team had already chalked up a couple wins, both of them coming away from home at Gwangju (0-2) and FC Seoul (0-1), making a seamless start to their second successive season in South Korea’s top division.
Since then, however, that early momentum has undoubtedly subsided. The previous ten rounds producing fewer points and just the one victory (W1 D3 L6), a slender 1-0 success against a Suwon Bluewings outfit currently kept out of the relegation zone by goal difference. Their had been signs of recovery more recently, though, picking up five of a possible nine points before going down 2-1 at home to FC Seoul last time out.
Seongnam can also point to a favourable head-to-head record, in particular as the visiting party, having not lost away to Incheon in ten previous league visits, prevailing in five of these instances since a 2-1 reverse in 2011. Furthermore, coach Kim Nam-il has overseen a side which has fared commendably on their travels thus far, collecting more away points (12 – W3 D3 L1) than all but three teams, losing only at leaders Ulsan.

The only team still without a win after fourteen matches, Incheon United, play host to the side which has only one to its name in the last ten. So, to describe this as a contest between two out-of-sorts outfits is probably an understatement. Although a visiting Seongnam can at least take heart from a recent run of one defeat in four (W1 D2 L1), not to mention a fine record at Sunday’s hosts.
