Preview: Phil Neville’s Inter Miami continue their mission for a first win since May when they welcome CF Montreal, a team coming off successive defeats, to DRV PNK Stadium. It is a fixture which has been dominated by the latter.

Inter Miami – Still stuck in slump despite recent point?

The Herons resume their painstaking search for a first MLS victory since the middle of May this coming weekend. This after finally snapping a demoralising six-game losing stretch. Claiming a hard-earned 1-1 draw at home to Philadelphia Union last time, in which they were mere minutes from a badly needed three points. Next up for Phil Neville and his Miami side, an unfavourable match up with CF Montreal.

Inter Miami have already succumbed twice this season to Sunday’s (Saturday for those residing in the US) opponents, both times without troubling the scoring, bringing their overall record across three meetings to three losses and only the one scored. On that basis then, Neville and his beleaguered players could be set for further frustration. Particularly as they are one of just two sides still to win at home (D2 L5).

There were some positive takeaways from last week’s result with the Supporter’s Shield holders. Arguably the most significant was Gonzalo Higuain looking something close to his best, laying on the assist for the team’s go-ahead goal as well as being their most threatening attacker with three efforts on target. As a team, though, that is now two scored in seven since a 3-2 win at FC Cincinnati on 22 May.

CF Montreal – Momentum fading after successive losses?

While they did leave Gillette Stadium empty handed last time out, they did so with their reputation preserved – if not slightly enhanced – after giving the best team in the East a run for their money. Ultimately, though, that 2-1 reverse against New England Revolution means they are coming off back-to-back defeats having also gone down by the slenderest of margins away at New York City the time before.

Prior to this latest dip Montreal had been unbeaten in six, winning four including a 1-0 scoreline against Inter Miami, in what was easily their most productive spell of the campaign so far. So it is hardly panic stations for Wilfried Nancy, the Montreal coach who will have been proud but more so encouraged by the sight of his team going toe-to-toe with two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

To be honest, this team does tend to hold up well against most comers. Of their five defeats so far, only the 2-0 scoreline away at Vancouver Whitecaps saw them beaten by a margin greater than one goal. Four were on the road, though, where they have one point from the last nine available. Goals have also been precious, with a modest tally of three coming from their previous five away encounters (W1 D1 L3).

Inter Miami Vs CF Montreal Betting Advice

A point against Philadelphia Union was a step in the right direction for Inter Miami. However they are still stuck in one of the worst ruts in the MLS, with their current seven-match winless streak second only to the ten of Atlanta United. Phil Neville is still to see his side win in Miami either, picking up two of a possible 21 points at DRV PNK Stadium where five of seven visiting teams plundered a minimum of two goals.

Inter Miami Vs CF Montreal – Key Facts:

  • This weekend’s visitors to DRV PNK Stadium boast a considerable upper hand heading into a fourth ever meeting with Inter Miami. Montreal winning all three previous encounters by an aggregate of 5-1.
  • Inter Miami extended their winless run to seven games with a 1-1 draw at home to Philadelphia Union. They are yet to win at home in seven tries in 2021 (D2 L5).
  • CF Montreal arrive in Miami having lost twice in a row, both away from home, for only a second time all season, but were unbeaten in six beforehand (W4 D2).

I’ve not seen enough of an improvement that would tell me Inter Miami, yet to win at home in seven attempts, are worthy favourites here. CF Montreal aren’t the best of travelling side. But they’re not the worst, avoiding defeat in exactly half of eight away fixtures thus far (W2 D2 L4). And they’re certainly a great deal better on the road than Phil Neville’s men are in Miami. They’ve also won all three prior meetings.
