Preview: Struggling Inter Miami have genuine reason to believe their dire sequence of results could finally be coming to an end this weekend. After six successive defeats, Phil Neville’s men welcome one of only two sides they have actually beaten this season, a Philadelphia Union outfit without an away win in five.

Inter Miami – Neville feeling the Florida heat?

Phil Neville, in the lead up to Inter Miami’s recent clash with in-conference leaders New England Revolution, spoke about ‘urgency’ with his team so far off course from the play-offs in the Eastern Conference that they are firm favourites for the Wooden Spoon. The former Manchester United defender also spoke of 23 finals remaining. Well, they’ve already lost the first of those. And in resounding fashion too.

Wednesday’s 5-0 scoreline to the Revs – a high quality team which has taken the East by the scruff of the neck – was shocking purely because of the emphatic nature rather than the result itself. The Herons went into it without registering a single point in five games, and having not won any of five (D1 L4) this season to be played at DRV PNK Stadium, so were never likely to trouble one of MLS’ better sides.

Nevertheless, that display was abject. Five of seven Inter Miami losses sustained previously over the course of the campaign were by a solitary goal, so this was a real downing of tools from a dispirited collective. That is now one goal in six games, beaten to nil in five, scoring none in all but one of the last four at home. It’s truly desperate stuff, and one has to wonder how much juice is left in the Neville era.

Philadelphia Union – Favourites but not convincing ones?

With how the action unfolded from Saturday’s batch of matches in the MLS, the Philadelphia Union will be feeling the pressure ahead of inarguably the most presentable fixture around at this moment in time. However, The Union have already seen wins for Columbus Crew and Nashville SC, two teams in close proximity towards the top of the Eastern Conference. But can climb back up to third with three points here.

Consistency has been a big problem of late. Their form across the last seven league outings reads DWDLDWL. The latest a 2-1 defeat against the other team from the Florida region, Orlando City. Their last three victories, meanwhile, were all back home at Subaru Park, where their numbers this season remain a lot more healthier than they do on the road having won just twice away from home thus far (W2 D4 L1).

The last of those triumphs was in May. A scrappy 1-0 result in DC. Jim Curtin has since watched his team toil for five consecutive away outings, with draws against struggling Atlanta United and Chicago Fire, as well as a decent New York City FC, doing little to offset losing efforts at Nasvhille and Orlando City. Therefore, in what many will perceive as a gimme of a fixture, Sunday may not be so straightforward.

Inter Miami Vs Philadelphia Union Betting Advice

With zero points from the last six matches and only one goal scored, the situation at Inter Miami is beyond critical point if they are to salvage a season only a third of the way deep. Moreover, Phil Neville’s side are yet to win here at DRV PNK Stadium, collecting one point from a possible 18 in Miami, Florida. Therefore it is unsurprising opponents Philadelphia Union start as favourites, despite some spotty form of their own.

Inter Miami Vs Philadelphia Union – Key Facts:

  • Last place meets fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference. Inter Miami sit bottom of the league but would produce one of only two wins in the reverse fixture.
  • That aforementioned win, a 2-1 scoreline in Philadelphia, dented what was a previously perfect record in this fixture for The Union (W2 L1).
  • Two of the three prior MLS meetings produced Both Teams to Score. That was also the case in four of the past five Philadelphia Union matches and three of the six played here in Miami for Inter Miami.

The Union dropped to fifth in the East after Saturday’s action. While they’ve enjoyed much the better season thus far, it is one win in five for Jim Curtin and his team, who have taken only three of the last 15 points on the road. All but one of these, meanwhile, seen both teams find the back of the net. Inter Miami’s issues in attack are well known, but they were unfortunate last time when striking the woodwork twice.
