Preview: A second meeting of the season between these teams, and supporters inside DRV PNK Stadium – home to Phil Neville’s improving Inter Miami – are banking on a more enthralling spectacle unfolding than the goalless affair we all had to endure inside Philadelphia Union‘s Subaru Park in May.

Inter Miami – Defence continues to carry misfiring offensive?

Phil Neville’s side are becoming much tougher to overcome. They very nearly made it one defeat in eight last time out in Florida against Orlando City, only to shoot themselves in the foot late on via Damion Lowe’s own goal with 91 minutes on the clock. Talk about a frustrating conclusion to a contest they more than merited a share of the spoils, limiting their hosts inside Exploria Stadium to a meagre 0.88 xG.

Arguably the biggest – and most disappointing – takeaway from Sunday’s 1-0 loss was Miami’s shortcomings in attack. To come away with only one shot on target from ten attempts totalling just 0.80 xG, against a team that shipped five in their previous outing, was another stark reminder that Neville’s side – which has now scored one or none in six of ten prior matches – are still missing something going forward.

Key Stat: There were Under 2.5 Goals in seven of ten previous Inter Miami MLS Matches, but only once was this the case across their last seven league outings at DRV PNK Stadium.

Philadelphia Union – Back on top, but here to stay?

In the West, LAFC have made that top spot their own. No team – aside from possibly New York City, who would manage a solid spell in first place until recently losing their way – has managed to replicate that in the East. Philadelphia Union tried and failed, surrendering the lead at the close of June almost as soon as they earned it. Jim Curtin’s men have their noses in front once more, though, lessons learnt and all.

The club’s biggest margin of victory in their MLS history, a 7-0 shellacking of a sorry DC United at Subaru Park in Philly, seeing The Union move back into a share of the lead in the Eastern Conference, level on 33 points but with a game in hand on NYRB. That emphatic win – netting five inside the first period – was only their third across a 13-game span (D8 L1), having won one of seven road fixtures (D4 L2) since March.

Key Stat: Those seven unanswered goals Philadelphia Union put past DC United last weekend were only three fewer than either team had managed in The Union’s ten previous MLS fixtures, with seven of eight prior matches seeing Under 2.5 Goals.

Inter Miami Vs Philadelphia Union Betting Advice

Each of the past three MLS meetings between the teams has seen Inter Miami avoid defeat and Phil Neville’s side are a best priced 4/7 to do so again. Those odds may seem a little thin but there is plenty working in their favour. The Herons haven’t lost a home league game since April, winning five of six subsequent games at DRV PNK Stadium – a venue NYRB, whom share the lead atop the East with The Union, lost at in May.

Inter Miami Vs Philadelphia Union – Key Facts:

  • After winning the first two league meetings (both in Philadelphia), it is now no win in three head-to-head games for Philadelphia Union (D2 L1) with the most recent two ending in stalemate (1-1 in Miami in July 2021, 0-0 in Philly in May 2022).
  • There has been Under 2.5 Goals in seven of the last ten Inter Miami MLS matches. Philadelphia Union, meanwhile, have seen nine of their last 12 in the competition see fewer than three goals.
  • Inter Miami will be confident of claiming a positive outcome having gone unbeaten as hosts in their last six such matches (W5 D1). Conversely, Philadelphia Union would win only one of their past seven away from home in MLS (D4 L2).

Factor in some solid yet uninspiring away form from the visitors and we have prime conditions for another strong home showing from Inter Miami. But do the latter have enough to inflict what would be only a third MLS loss of the season upon Philadelphia Union? Jim Curtin’s team are a resilient sort, don’t give up many goals, and would end up drawing four of their last six on the road. That is the bet, another drawn H2H.
