Preview: Only a win will suffice at San Siro for Inter Milan on Sunday, when they renew acquaintances with a Bologna side which beat them 1-0 during last season’s visit to Milan. Will the Nerazzurri be able to avenge that surprising loss and keep their faint Scudetto hopes alive?

Inter Milan Preview – Nerazzurri firepower to prove the difference?

It is three wins from four post-restart fixtures in Serie A for Antonio Conte and his Inter Milan (3rd – W19 D7 L3) side, gaining wins over Sampdoria (2-1), Parma (1-2) and Brescia (6-0) but coming a cropper against the ever dangerous Sassuolo. Had it not been for the latter, rescuing a point at the San Siro with a goal scored moments before the end of normal time during a bizarre game, more might have been made about the Nerazzurri’s title credentials.

As it is, Inter, currently trailing leaders Juventus by eight points and second-placed Lazio by four, need several favours before the season is completed to have any chance of ending their decade-long drought without a league title. All they can do in the meanwhile is carry on winning and applying pressure on the top two, which is what they did in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, thrashing lowly Brescia 6-0 in Milan.

Bologna are expected to put up a lot more fight, though, and it took a late Romelu Lukaku brace to secure three points in Matchday 11’s reverse of this fixture. So there really is no reason for Antonio Conte to underestimate his opposite number. Yet Inter, beaten once at San Siro all season (W9 D5 L1), have now scored 15 goals across their previous four home fixtures and could take some stopping on Sunday.

Bologna Preview – Porous Rossoblu not expected to keep second successive San Siro shutout?

A top-half finish has to be the main aim now for Bologna (11th – W10 D8 L11), who are comfortably clear of the relegation area of Serie A (13 points better off than 18-placed Lecce) but too far cut adrift of the top-six (7 points from sixth-placed Napoli) to realistically mount a challenge for the European positions. It is perhaps little wonder then that with next to nothing tangible left to play for, the Emilia-Romagna outfit have struggled of late.

Since the Serie A restart the Rossoblu have fared reasonably well, picking up four of a possible nine points, bouncing back from a 2-0 home reverse at the hands of Juventus with a 2-1 victory in Sampdoria and a 1-1 draw at home to Cagliari. However, it does now mean Sinisa Mihajlovic’s team boast just one win from their past six league games (W1 D2 L3), during which only four goals were netted.

If a lack of goals was disconcerting ahead of Sunday’s visit to the San Siro, to face an Inter side whom they inflicted a surprise 1-0 defeat upon during last season’s visit to Milan, then their defensive abandonment is alarming. Bologna have conceded 46 goals in 29 games thus far, more than any team currently in the top-half, keeping just two clean sheets – and none since Matchday 5’s 0-0 stalemate in Genoa – all season.

Inter Milan Vs Bologna Betting Advice

This promises to be an open game, with Bologna expected to test this brittle Inter Milan backline but are likely to leave themselves exposed throughout. Both teams have scored in 76% of Bologna’s Serie A fixtures in 2019-20, including seven of the last ten. Inter have scored and conceded in 66% of their matches so far, with nine of the past eleven complying. Goals seem a mere formality.

Inter Milan Vs Bologna – Key Facts

  • 15 goals scored in four Serie A fixtures since the restart from Inter Milan, with all three of their wins during this period accompanied by three or more goals in the match.
  • One win from the last six Serie A games for Bologna (W1 D2 L3), who have four points from nine (W1 D1 L1) since the break.
  • Last season, Bologna produced an upset at the San Siro as they secured their first away triumph over Inter Milan for six years after a 1-0 success.

Last season’s same fixture only produced the one, however, as Bologna deservedly claimed a 1-0 victory to clinch their first win at the San Siro over Inter since 2013. That was the first meeting there for five seasons not to produce goals for both teams. A repeat would spell disaster for the hosts, whose superior form since the break (W3 D1 vs W1 D1 L1) stands them in good stead to exact revenge on Sunday.
