Preview: It is third against first at San Siro as Inter Milan aim to reduce a seven point deficit on Napoli – who share a lead atop Serie A with Inter’s cross-city rivals, AC Milan – when the sides of Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalletti, respectively, clash in the weekend’s most eagerly-anticipated fixture from Italy.

Inter Milan – Inzaghi still waiting for statement victory?

Already seven points off title pace, currently set by AC Milan and Napoli, defending champions Inter know a defeat in Saturday’s home meeting with the Partonepei would leave them facing a mountainous task if they wish to retain their Serie A crown. They enter the biggest fixture of the weekend unbeaten in four league outings (W2 D2) following their 1-1 draw in the Derby della Madonnia a fortnight ago.

The Nerazzurri’s record in the crunch matches this season hasn’t been the best, though, and makes them susceptible versus the league’s best travellers. Simone Inzaghi’s men have faced four of last season’s top six (AC Milan, Atalanta, Juventus and Lazio), failing to win them all. This includes score draws at San Siro with Atalanta and Juventus – with those the only home games they didn’t manage to win this season (W3 D2).

Key Stat: This season, Inter Milan have only managed to register three clean sheets (versus Empoli, Genoa and Udinese) across eleven Serie A matches, though they did net at least once in all eleven.

Napoli – Serie A’s most miserly rearguard to shine in Milan?

Luciano Spalletti’s all-conquering side did something prior to the international hiatus that they had only previously managed once all season. A 1-1 draw at home to Hellas Verona marked only the second occasion in 12 Serie A outings Napoli didn’t end up with all three points, having won 10 of 11 league fixtures beforehand. Fortunately for them, Sunday’s opponents Inter did them a favour in the Milan derby.

Napoli resume still on top, but only ahead of AC Milan by virtue of their superior goal difference. This is largely down to an outstanding defence record, conceding just four goals so far and never more than once in any one game. No team has more clean sheets so far than their seven, while a return of 16 points from six away outings (W5 D1) gives them the joint-best away record in Italy.

Key Stat: With four goals conceded in 12 league matches in 2021-22, Napoli boast the strongest defence in Serie A and by a considerable margin. However, of those four goals, three were the opening goal of the game.

Inter Milan Vs Napoli Betting Advice

Part of the reason for Inter Milan not being as close to the leaders at this stage is down to their disappointing record against the top sides. The Nerazzurri have faced four of the top six teams from last season and didn’t win any (D3 L1), with Atalanta and Juventus both departing San Siro with a share of the points. But with ground to make up on Sunday’s visitors, this is ideally a fixture they have to be winning.

Inter Milan Vs Napoli – Key Facts:

  • Seven points separate Inter Milan, in third, from Napoli, in first, ahead of Sunday’s exciting clash at the San Siro, where Inter are seeking a third successive Serie A home win in this fixture.
  • Napoli will be bullish about the prospect of avoiding another reverse, however, having won five of their six Serie A away games so far, conceding only twice in these fixtures.
  • There have been fewer than three match goals in five of the last six league games involving Napoli, and all of the previous four featuring Inter Milan.

Inter are yet to misfire all season, scoring in all 12 league games, so could this all change when Napoli, who have given up a scarcely believable four goals thus far, make their way to Milan? The team from Naples have only dropped two points away from home, with five wins out of six, but have not faced anyone of note aside from AS Roma and that resulted in a bore 0-0 draw. I reckon they’d settle for another, though.
