After their unsuccessful attempt at retaining the Serie A title won back in 2020-21, the pressure was on from the outset for Inter Milan who got their season underway with a visit to newly-promoted opposition in the shape of Lecce. Spezia – Aquilotti already off the ground in third Serie A campaign?
The Ligurians surpassed expectations in 2021-22, avoiding the drop with several games to spare to finish six points clear of danger in 16th. A fine achievement considering they ended the campaign in questionable form. From mid-February on wards, Spezia would only muster up three wins out of 15 (D2 L10). By the end Luca Gotti was neither able to stem the flow of goals his team were shipping or prevent a string of defeats.
Spezia wrapped up the previous season losing five of the final six matches, conceding 17 across this run and conceding at least twice in each outing. So, understandably, there was big question marks hanging over them heading into only their third spell in Serie A. Last week’s 1-0 home win against Empoli felt like a strong riposte, then. Forward M’Bala Nzola’s 14th Serie A goal settled a game of few chances.
