Preview: The Nerazzurri‘s march towards a first Serie A title since 2009-10 has lost some of its momentum of late, following back-to-back draws. Antonio Conte’s men can look forward to a presentable fixture this weekend, though, welcoming a Verona outfit which has lost six of its last seven league games.

Inter Milan – Conte’s men inching towards title?

With such a commanding advantage atop Serie A, there was always the prospect of complacency creeping in at some stage. This would partly explain how Inter (W23 D7 L2) only managed to take two points from the last six available, after successive 1-1 draws away to Napoli and Spezia. The former a creditable result against one of the division’s better performing sides of late, the latter incredibly unfortunate.

A ten point lead means they can absorb quite a few setbacks before the season is out and still finish comfortably clear. Especially with how inconsistent the chasing pack remains. Not that Antonio Conte will allow them to rest on their laurels. Inter went eleven games in a row without dropping a point before those draws, and are currently unbeaten in the league for more than three months (W12 D4).

Here in Milan, it is twelve consecutive Serie A wins – thirteen when including their 3-0 triumph in the Milan derby as the designated away side – since a 2-2 draw with Parma in late October. They are a winning machine this season, and can very easily be forgiven for those recent mishaps. Inter were utterly dominant last time as well (xG: SPE 0.03 – 2.89 INT) but couldn’t convert any number of gilt-edged chances.

Verona – Top-half finish in real jeopardy?

Realistically the highest position Verona (W11 D8 L13) can now hope to attain is ninth, which is where they finished last time around on their return to Serie A following relegation in 2017-18. It could have been so much better though. They have collected a paltry three points from their last seven matches, a worse return than the likes of Cagliari and Parma, clubs mired in the relegation zone.

Put simply, this team is mired in relegation form. Or to use an English expression: “They are on the beach.” They won’t be relegated, nor can they finish much higher than where they already are. It could be argued, however, that they’ve had a tough run of games: Atalanta and AC Milan are in the top-three, Lazio are fighting it out for Europe, and Sassuolo are shaping well in eighth as the best of the rest.

Yet they’ve now been beaten twice in a week. First by Fiorentina, who are only five points above the drop, and then Sampdoria, whose 3-1 triumph at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris saw Claudio Ranieri’s men climb above Ivan Juric’s beleaguered charges. Perhaps the one crumb of comfort is their away form: having lost the last four at home, they have taken seven points from fifteen on the road (W2 D1 L2).

Inter Milan Vs Verona Betting Advice

Earlier in the season this would have been viewed as a tricky match up for Antonio Conte and Inter. After all, they’ve not beaten Sunday’s opponents by more than a single goal in six of their last seven league meetings, scraping a 2-1 win in Verona when these sides met earlier in the campaign. However, with the way Verona are now playing, I actually think we could see the runaway league leaders cut loose.

Inter Milan Vs Verona – Key Facts:

  • A bet on Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score would have returned a winner in five of the six previous Serie A meetings between these sides, with Inter prevailing 2-1 in Verona earlier this season.
  • Inter Milan have won their last twelve Serie A home games. However, each of the previous three saw them win by a single-goal margin (vs Atalanta, Cagliari & Atalanta).
  • Verona come into this daunting fixture in dismal form. It is now six defeats in seven, although they have fared better on the road recently, scoring in each of the last five away fixtures (W2 D1 L2).

Verona come into this game having lost six in seven, and while they’ve faced some difficult opponents, the last two were Fiorentina (13th) and Sampdoria (9th). None of those six were by more than a two-goal margin. While Ivan Juric’s side do tend to score on their travels, having done so in each of the last five. This only increases the likelihood of a big-scoring victory for Inter, seeking their 13-straight Serie A home win.
