Ipswich Town Preview – Can Ipswich get their campaign off to a winning start at home?

Expectations were high last season that Ipswich could return to the Championship at the first time of asking. Those hopes were increased further when Town got off to an excellent start – going unbeaten in their first 11 games, winning eight of them. That seen them top the table in October but it was all downhill from there. Paul Lambert’s men won only two of their next 12 in the league, gradually falling down the division.

There was a slight rally but eventually their form dipped again and Ipswich had to settle for 11th in the end up, eight points off sixth. Losing their last four games proved decisive.

Lambert will be well aware that his team need to find consistency if they are to be challenging for promotion this season. Ipswich have to learn lessons from the previous campaign and that starts tomorrow. Anything less than a win in this one and they will leave themselves open for a lot of criticism considering the circumstances of their opponents.

There’s plenty of experience in the squad to help as the season progresses. The likes of Alan Judge, Stephen Ward, Luke Chambers and Freddy Sears all seasoned campaigners at a higher level.

Wigan Athletic Preview – Are Wigan set to put their troubles behind them and record an opening day win?

It may be the start of a new season but Wigan supporters will not be as eagerly anticipating the campaign as much as they would ordinarily. The club remain in administration as they look for a new buyer and one of the legacies of their financial troubles remains that 12 point deduction which essentially seen them relegated. John Sheridan has only been appointed manager in the last 24 hours with virtually no time to work with the squad.

The squad from last season has also been decimated with the vast majority moving on to pastures new. Another predictable outcome of the club’s strife.

A much changed and very youthful Wigan team were somewhat unfortunate in losing 3-2 away to Fleetwood Town last week in the first round of the EFL Cup. They went 2-0 up courtesy of a double from Joe Garner but were unable to hang on against one of the League One playoff finishers from the previous season.

They will take some confidence from that performance. It also highlights the limitations of having such an inexperienced squad. Whilst the squad that were relegated last season would likely have been big favourites to win this league, expectations are much more modest now and the priority is stabilising the club.

Ipswich Town vs Wigan Athletic Betting Advice

These teams have been closely aligned for the past decade but Portman Road is not a favourite venue for the visitors. Their last win here was six years ago and they have managed only a point from their last three meetings here. It’s Ipswich who are fancied to continue their good record against Wigan, not least because of the significant departures that the Lactics have had to contend with.

Lambert’s men will take confidence from defeating Bristol Rovers comfortably in the EFL Cup last weekend. They were less than impressive in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal’s youngsters in the EFL Trophy a few days later, however.

Key Facts – Ipswich Town vs Wigan Athletic Betting Tip

  • Ipswich lost their final four games of last season, finishing 11th and eight points outside the playoffs
  • Due to administration Wigan have seen over 15 first team players leave during the close season
  • Wigan’s last victory at Portman Road was back in 2014 – they have picked up just a point in their last three visits

Ipswich should win this, all things considered, but the preference for the selection is over 2.5 goals. Wigan showed last week they will ship plenty but are still dangerous going forward. Over 2.5 is the bet in this one.
