Following a promising start to the new Championship season, Ipswich Town will now be looking to kick-start their campaign on Saturday afternoon when they take on Preston North End at Portman Road.

Ipswich started the new season off in style as they racked up four wins on the trot with victories over Birmingham City, Barnsley, Millwall and Brentford and had won six of their first nine matches in the Championship as they looked among the early contenders for a play-off spot.

However, four defeats from their next five matches have seen the Tractor Boys drop out of the top six and now sit in a disappointing mid-table position as another season without making the play-offs now seems to loom. Ipswich have recently suffered back-to-back defeats at home to Bristol City and Norwich City, and a third this afternoon could increase the pressure on manager, Mick McCarthy.

Preston North End are another side that will be keen not to falter after making a solid start to the new Championship season as they’d been beaten just once in their first 12 league matches of the new term, which was a 1-0 loss away at high-flying Derby County.

Alex Neil’s side had chalked up wins on the road over Birmingham City and Hull City, along with points at Middlesbrough and Fulham in 0-0 and 2-2 draws respectively prior to their 3-2 defeat away at Championship leaders, Wolves.

Back-to-back defeats at Deepdale against Brentford and Aston Villa have seen Preston drop down to mid-table, but they have a chance of avoiding a fourth defeat on the trot at an out of sorts Ipswich Town this afternoon.
