Ipswich Town Preview – Are Ipswich set to start as they mean to go in their bid for promotion?

Paul Cook has been in charge at Portman Road since March and he will have learned a lot during that time. Cook – who won this division with Wigan back in 2018 – seen his new club finish in ninth spot which was five points off the playoff positions. The Tractor Boys had a strong finish to their campaign, unbeaten in their last four. The damage was done before Cook arrived although there will be some frustration that Ipswich did draw five of their last nine games. Considering the points gap between them and sixth it’s a case of what could have been.

Cook will be looking for his team to be vastly improved on that showing and hope that they can progress even beyond a playoff spot with all eyes on automatic promotion in what looks to be an extremely open game.

Our betting prediction
Over 2.5 goals
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Friday 6 August)

There has been a number of new players through the doors and that’s not surprising. The club have stagnated for a number of years and Cook is attempting to freshen things up as well as find the type of player that is required to win games at this level.

George Edmundson is a significant arrival from Rangers having spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby. Rakeem Harper also steps down from the Championship whilst Joseph Piggot has been brought in from AFC Wimbledon having scored 20 goals in this division last year. Only two players managed more.

Morecambe Preview – Can Morecambe make their first foray into League One football a winning one?

Morecambe may have won promotion to League One last season but they were in search for a new manager virtually immediately after winning the playoff final against Newport County back in May. Derek Adams elected to take over as Bradford City and it left the chance for Stephen Robinson to return to English football after a successful spell in Scotland with Motherwell.

Robinson – who has managed Oldham in this division before – will be well aware that his team are fancied to go straight back down. He will attempt to use that as motivation for his players. Many of whom are playing in League One for the first time.

Jonathan Obika is one of the club’s new signings. He is familiar with this level having previously played in the division for Oxford and Swindon. He’ll provide a focal point in attack alongside Cole Stockton who will be the main goal threat with last year’s top scorer Carlos Gomes now at Luton.

Robinson has also used his knowledge of the Scottish game to bring in Greg Leigh from Aberdeen. Leigh can play in a number of positions and is another with experience of the league having played in it with Bury.

Ipswich Town vs Morecambe Betting Advice

Ipswich will have hopes of winning automatic promotion this season whilst Morecambe are all about survival. They’re teams at opposite ends of the spectrum. That said, the home team have to deal with that expectation. And with it being Morecambe’s first game at this level there will be additional motivation for them to get a result here.
