Britain’s number one Johanna Konta will be looking to put a disappointing US Open campaign behind her and get back to winning ways.

She will be meeting Irina-Camelia Begu for the first time on Thursday, as they go head to head in the WTA Rome draw.

Konta will be meeting a player who has had a good, confident season.

Irina-Camelia Begu Preview – Will the Romanian upset Konta?

Irina-Camelia Begu is on a good 18/7 win/loss record for the season. So she has had plenty of time on the court in 2020 compared to some.

The bulk of the Romanian’s success has been at lowered tiered events, such as the title at the ITF Cairo event in February and her Level 125k title at Indian Wells in the Oracle Challenger Series in March.

She did come back into form in August as well when she reached the semi-finals of the Prague Open, where she was stopped by competitor Simona Halep.

In the first round of this year’s US Open, Begu was dispatched in the first round by Petra Kvitova.

Very interestingly the betting markets have Begu as the 4/5 odds-on favourite against Konta for Thursday’s meeting* (odds taken 02:39 GMT, Wednesday 16th September).

The two of them have not met in a singles match before, so the new ground will be broken here.

Begu was in action in the opening round of WTA Rome this week, collecting a facile win over Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in that contest.

She’s really not to be counted out of this one and she doesn’t look bad to at least get a set on the board in this one.

Johanna Konta Preview – Brit faces a tricky opener in Rome

Johanna Konta got a pass in the first round of WTA Rome, so will be making her tournament entrance here.

This is not an easy game for her, for the reasons we have stated above.

But looking at Konta and the even-money quote on her for the win, well that has to have some appeal for tennis betting* (odds taken 02:39 GMT, Wednesday 16th September).

Konta can be a frustrating player to back at times, but she had that fantastic run to the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open just before the US Open.

She was knocked off in three sets thereby US Open runner up Victoria Azarenka there as well, so Konta’s form was franked.

However, the frustrating side came out as she was beaten 2-1 by Sorana Cirstea in just the second round of the US Open.

Johanna Konta had cruised to a first-set success in that match against Cirstea as well. Cirstea is ranked below Begu in the world rankings at the moment.

So for sure, this is not an easy opener in Rome for Konta at all, but we can still find reason enough to back her.

Irina-Camelia Begu vs Johanna Konta Betting Advice

Johanna Konta can be costly to back sometimes in tennis, but we have to take a look at her overall recent form.

Yes, the US Open was a wipe-out for her, but the service that she had working at the Western & Southern Open was superb.

There is always going to be a match like she had against Cirstea at Flushing Meadows, when an opponent just steps it up out of the blue.

  • Irina-Camelia Begu is W18 L7 this season on the WTA
  • Irina-Camelia Begu meets Konta for the first time in singles

But Konta has been performing at a good level so far since the return of action, and at a higher level as well.

It all goes back to Konta’s service games. If her serve is on point, the Brit has a great chance and the Konta 2-1 in set betting has appeal at 15/4* (odds taken 02:39 GMT, Wednesday 16th September).
