Italy Preview – Can Italians continue 100% record and reach the brink of qualification?
It’s not always been pretty but Italy’s style under Roberto Mancini in this group has been effective and has put them within touching distance of making Euro 2020. Considering the disaster that was missing out on the last World Cup, nobody in the Italian camp will be taking anything for granted with four games left to play. Their last two qualifiers are a good summary of what their campaign has been like for the most part. On both occasions they required goals in the last 15 minutes to secure them victories. There’s no doubt that Mancini has instilled a desire and a will to win within this squad that has been lacking. It can go a long way to ensuring they reach the finals but they will need more quality if they are to make any sort of an impact.
The most impressive result in this group for Italy was the 3-0 success away to Greece back in June. If they can find that level of performance on a consistent basis then they could be in for a really positive future with a squad packed full of young talent. Defeat Greece and they will have practically qualified. There would be no uncertainty at all if they can get three points here and another victory against Liechtenstein on Tuesday. They could then relax ahead of their final couple of qualifiers next month.
Greece Preview – Do Greece have anything about them that could see them take the first points off Italy in this campaign?
The sooner this campaign is over for Greece, the better. The 2004 European Champions have not made a major finals since 2014. The golden period of qualifying regularly for the European Championships and World Cups seems to have gone and they are in the midst of a real struggle. That’s illustrated by the fact they have taken just five points from their six games in this section. Their only win so far came all the way back at the beginning of the campaign when defeating Liechtenstein 2-0 away from home. When following that up with a decent draw in Bosnia it was looking decent. The Greeks would have been feeling very positive about their chances at that point but it’s been all downhill since.
Home defeats to Italy and Armenia put the pressure on them and they have not been able to deal with it. Another loss in Finland followed before a disappointing home draw against Liechtenstein. They no have virtually no hope of finishing in the top two and are just playing out time. Bosnia travel to face them on Tuesday before finishing the campaign against Armenia and Finland. It’s four games that all associated with Greece could probably be doing without.
