After a disappointing US Open campaign, Johanna Konta will hope to get her French Open 2020 campaign off to a flying start.

Konta has not had the greatest of preparation however ahead of the tournament and she gets a tough opener to boot.

The 9th seed will meet young American sensation Cori Guaff in one of the highlight matches of the first round.

Johanna KontaPreview – Konta with a tough opener

This is no easy game for Konta because, during this clay season, which has been greatly shortened, Konta has only won one match.

That was her opener at the Italian Open earlier this month when she beat Irina Camelia Begu in straight sets.

The Brit was then blown away by Garbine Muguruza in the second round.

All of that was on the back of a second-round exit at the US Open after Konta had delivered some great form during her build-up to the Slam.

For this first round opener at the French open 2020 Konta is the 4/6 odds-on favourite* (odds taken 01:12 GMT, Sunday, 27th September).

But Konta can look back to last year’s French Open for some confidence as she reached the semi finals.

She is not a player that has really thrived on clay and she had suffered a first-round exit in each of her four previous French Open campaigns before that deep run last summer.

Our betting prediction:
Johanna Konta 6-4 first set
11/2

This will be the first meeting between Johanna Konta and Cori Gauff so we have no head to head form to look back at.

Overall for the season now Konta is at a W8 L8 heading into action at Roland Garros.

It is just those recent slips and the fact that she is coming into action at the Slam with no coach either, raise a question mark or two.

Still, if Konta is on her game and has her serve working well then she should get through and Konta 2-0 is at 13/8 in the set betting market for tennis betting.

Cori Gauff Preview – Can Gauff win her French Open debut?

Cori Gauff is taking part in the French Open for the first time in her young career. Wherever she goes, the 16-year-old attracts massive interest.

So it will be important for Konta to get past all the hype and focus on just what is in front of her.

That is a very good youngster with so much promise, but Gauff’s 2020 hasn’t quite gotten up to the hype levels of 2019.

At the start of the year, she made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open where she was beaten by eventual tournament winner Sofia Kenin.

On her return after the French Open, Gauff reached the semis of the Top Seed Open and then it has been a bit of a struggle since for her.

The American has won only one of her last four matches played.

As far as clay is concerned, she lost in the second round of the Italian Open earlier this month to Garbine Muguruza but put up a great fight there over three sets.

She has form on clay as does Gauff because just two years ago, the American was the junior French Open champion.

Gauff is the 6/5 underdog for what looks to be an intriguing first-round match* (odds taken 01:12 GMT, Sunday, 27th September).

Johanna Konta vs Cori Gauff Betting Advice

Cori Gauff brings a lot of power for her age. What she doesn’t bring is a great deal of consistency and that is where we think she will get tripped up.

The youngster’s serve is no match for that of the Konta serve, so if Konta is on top of her service game, which at times since the return of tennis, it has been.

Key Facts – Johanna Konta vs Cori Gauff Betting Tip

  • Johanna Konta has one of her last three matches only
  • Johanna Konta is seeded 9th for the 2020 French Open
  • Cori Gauff has won one of her last four matches only

This is a great match and no head to head to guide us, so we are going with the favourite, that’s a Konta 4/6 odds-on win in the match outright* (odds taken 01:12 GMT, Sunday, 27th September).

Konta has sounded well-focused in the build-up, not underplaying the threat that is in front of her either.

A Konta 2-0 in set betting is right at 13/8* (odds taken 01:12 GMT, Sunday, 27th September).
