The lid has been blown off the top of the 2020 Masters Darts. That is because five-time defending champion Michael van Gerwen was dumped out of the first round by Wales’ Jonny Clayton.

Clayton pulls off the shock of the season

Welshman Jonny Clayton was not given much of a chance by the bookmakers in his opening round match of the 2020 Masters against Michael van Gerwen. MVG had won the last five editions of the Masters, after all. But a massive upset was on the cards as 45-year-old Clayton, in just his second appearance in the Masters draw, took a 10-6 win.

That was some result. In his only televised Final in his PDC career, Clayton met Michael van Gerwen in the showcase match of the 2017 Players Championship Finals and was pounded 11-2.

Revenge must have felt sweet for Clayton who made a first-round exit on his Masters debut last year. Clayton only got his PDC Pro Tour card in 2015. The Ferret is back in the position of being an underdog for his quarter-final against Aspinall on Sunday.

 

Draw opens up for the Asp

Nathan Aspinall, fresh off a semi-final place at the World Championships, always looked a dark horse for the Masters from the outset. It was expected that any success in running to the title would have to involve him beating Michael van Gerwen in the draw.

Jonny Clayton has taken care of that problem for him. In the opening round, Aspinall eased to a comfortable 10-4 win over James and he looks in very good form at the moment.

It may be tough for his opponent to keep that mental focus going after such a career-high of beating MVG, and Aspinall looks to be in the mood to punish any openings given to him.

Clayton and Aspinall have met three times before. Clayton won the first two meetings which were at the Players Championship Barnsley in 2018 and 2019. In the most recent meeting, which was at last year’s German Open, Aspinall took a 6-3 victory.
