It may just be the second round of the Serie A season but we already have a mouthwatering prospect. Last year’s champions Juventus host runners up Napoli in what will be an early indication of what’s in store for the campaign.

Juventus Preview – Can Juve lay down a marker that they are to continue domination Serie A?

It’s all change with the Italian champions this season as Max Allegri waved goodbye to the club he led to five of their eight straight titles. Allegri was replaced, somewhat surprisingly, by Maurizo Sarri who had enjoyed such a positive time in charge of Napoli, leading to him getting the Chelsea job. It never worked out for him in London but he has got an even bigger job out of it on his return to Italy. In many ways it’s an unlikely marriage but there is an obvious desire to change how Juventus play as they attempt for European success to go along with their dominance domestically. Sarri was not in the dugout for his team’s win over Parma last weekend and will be missing through illness once again.

For all the new signings it was the old guard who started for Juve last season and it could well be a similar case as they face one of their likely title rivals so early in the campaign. That old guard includes former Napoli striker Gonazalo Higuain who looked as though he was out of favour. Higuain started last week and has scored five goals against his former employers.

Napoli Preview – Is this Napoli team capable of winning in Turin and finally overcoming Juve in the league?

This is Carlo Ancelotti’s second season in charge and he himself has stated that now is the time for Napoli to start winning things. A series of second placed finishes have shown their promise but that has to turn into silverware now. Whether that’s via the Coppa Italia, Europe or the much coveted Serie A title there is a definite change in mindset. Part of that is down to this group of players being at their peak but also because there is a sense Juventus are as vulnerable as they have been in a long time. This game provides Ancelotti and his players will get insight into whether or not that is true very early in the campaign.

There was plenty to like about Napoli’s win over Fiorentina last weekend and the manner of how they scored their four goals. Ancelotti will be well aware that his team will not be gifted as many opportunities against the champions, though. Napoli will have to defend better as it would be very unlikely they will get away with conceding three goals for a second week in the row and still getting a result. The signing of Kostas Manolas from Roma was made for games such as this one.

Key-Facts – Juventus v Napoli

  • Juve are looking for a ninth straight Serie A title and got their defence off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory at Parma
  • Napoli won their first game of the season in entertaining fashion, seeing of Fiorentina 4-3
  • It will be a quick reunion for Maurizo Sarri who left Napoli in 2018 to join Chelsea before taking over as Juventus boss this summer – illness means he will not be in attendance, however

Juventus v Napoli Betting Advice

This has been the biggest game in Italian football for the past few seasons with Juve and Napoli occupying the top two positions the majority of the time. The Turin club tend to have the upper hand but Napoli did register a rare win in this stadium in April 2018. That remains their only win at the Allianz Stadium. Although wins have been hard to come by, the Naples club have scored on six of their last seven visits.

Juventus showed that although Sarri is now in charge, they remain a superbly well organised team having completely nullified Parma’s attack last week. This will be a be a much stiffer challenge, though, with Napoli’s attack much more dynamic. Six out the last eight meetings between these teams have finished with both teams scoring and that’s the outcome I like most in this eagerly anticipated match-up.
