Upon their visit to the Allianz Stadium during last season’s Serie A campaign, Parma sprung a huge surprise when coming from 3-1 down to claim a 3-3 draw with a goal scored right at the death. Juventus will be keen to avoid a similar occurrence in Sunday’s corresponding fixture.

Juventus Preview – Sarrismo in full effect since turn of the year?

The Old Lady is out in front, which usually means only one thing judging by the fact the club have been crowned Italian champions for the past eight seasons running. Therefore the sight of Juventus (1st – W15 D3 L1, GF37 GA18) returning to Serie A’s summit, on the back of their hard-earned victory away to AS Roma last time out, must be a disheartening sight for their rivals. Up next, however, is a fixture which seen them drop points in last season.

Juve coach Maurizio Sarri has overseen a perfect start to 2020, witnessing his side overcoming Roma (1-2) and Cagliari (4-0) in the league whilst cruising into the Coppa Italia last-eight with another 4-0 success, this time at home to Udinese. Ten goals scored, only one conceded and a couple of rare clean sheets. It hasn’t all been serene, though, with news that central defender Merih Demiral has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign a significant blow.

The loss of Demiral will be negated by Matthijs de Ligt, the club’s big-money signing from the summer who is now set for a more consistent run in the team. The Dutch international hasn’t convinced in Italy so far and must slide into a defence which has managed only one shut out in Serie A in the previous seven. It helps, of course, to boast an embarrassment of riches in the attacking department – Ronaldo & Co have scored a minimum of two goals in all but one of nine home games this season (W8 D1).

Parma Preview – Gialloblu out to produce another surprise?

Last season, Parma (7th – W8 D4 L7, GF26 GA25) produced one of the standout results in Serie A in this very fixture. It was unquestionably the most rousing comeback, as a Gervinho brace – the latter scored deep into second-half stoppage time – helped them claw back a 3-1 deficit to earn a seemingly unthinkable 3-3 draw. In spite of these recent heroics serving as a reminder of what this team are capable of on their day, bookmakers aren’t holding out much hope about a repeat this weekend.

That is slightly surprising when taking into account the vast improvements made by this side during the first half of this term – this, it is worth pointing out, was a club which finished three points clear of relegation at the end of 2018/19. Now, sixth place is merely a point from reach. Moreover, under Roberto D’Aversa the Gialloblu have established a habit for defying the odds this season, with few expecting them to depart San Siro with a 2-2 draw against Inter nor clinch maximum points in Naples by beating Napoli 2-1.

However, the turn of the year hasn’t exactly proved inspiring thus far. A heavy defeat away to Atalanta, losing 5-0, was a bitterly disappointing way for them to resume their Serie A commitments. Victory over Lecce next time out, beating a struggling outfit 2-0 on home soil, was a decent enough response, but to then bow out of the Coppa Italia in midweek by losing meekly at home to Roma was essentially a case of one step forward and two back.

Betting Summary

Juventus have undoubtedly begun the year sensationally, winning all three matches – two in Serie A, one in the cup – by a combined aggregate score of 10-1. More importantly, Sarri’s men are back on top of the Serie A standings. Victory here is imperative, then, and while they are deservedly strong favourites to do so their opponents have, however, displayed a propensity for delivering in incredibly difficult surroundings. This season Parma have drawn at Inter (2-2) and won at Napoli (1-2).

Juventus Vs Parma – Key Facts:

  • In Serie A, Juventus are enjoying a four-game winning sequence. Three were despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
  • Parma suffered their first Serie A away defeat for six matches (previously W2 D3) when losing 5-0 to Atalanta on 6 January.
  • During last season’s Turin encounter, Parma fought back from trailing 3-1 to earn an unlikely point with a 3-3 draw.

Of course, it should be duly noted that Parma have suffered several defeats on their travels this season (W3 D3 L3) and couldn’t lay a glove on both Lazio (2-0) and Atalanta (5-0) at their places, for example. So Juventus should justify favouritism here, although their defence has been porous enough – conceding at least once in six of the last seven Serie A matches, winning four – to suggest Parma, who have scored in four of their previous five away league games, can cause some problems in attack themselves.
