Similar to Barcelona, for much of this season it seemed Juventus were set to be among the major omissions from next season’s Champions League after a dreadful start to 2021/22. Although, it is worth noting their struggles when hosting promoted sides this term: beating Spezia 1-0 but losing 1-0 to Empoli.

Key Stat: Juventus have scored more than two goals in a home league game once all season (in 14 such matches), doing precisely this in none of the past 11 Serie A contests held at Juventus Stadium.

 

 

Salernitana – Long afternoon in store for Serie A stragglers?

While they do retain as many as two games in hand over the teams above them, Serie A survival is looking more and more futile with every passing week Salernitana aren’t winning. Last week’s 2-2 draw at home to Sassuolo – a creditable result in isolation against a top-half side – left them nine points adrift of safety at the foot of the table. They’re winless in eight since opening 2022 with victory at Hellas Verona.

However, five draws out of six (L1) suggests a team which has by no means giving up the fight just yet. Admittedly four of these were earned back at their Stadio Arechi. Their inadequacies were once again laid bare, though, in the 5-0 shellacking at the hands of Inter last time out on the road. Having also lost 4-1 at Napoli, 3-0 at Fiorentina, 3-0 at Lazio and 2-0 in Milan to AC, there is an ominous feel to this fixture.

Key Stat: Four of Salernitana’s previous five away defeats in Serie A were to nil, failing to score in trips to AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Inter Milan.

Having exited the Champions League at the round of 16 stage for a third season running in midweek, a strong response is not merely expected but demanded of Juventus this weekend. Anything less than a rapid start to proceedings could spark hostility inside Juventus Stadium. Promoted sides have fared well at this ground in 2021/22, though.
